About Me

CURRENT MISSION

retrain for secondary teaching

ABOUT ME

I am in Ottawa working on my B.Ed. so that I can teach high school physics and mathematics. I had a short but exciting academic career that makes for some fun coffee table talk (I was an historian of science). When I'm not working or studying I enjoy Aikido, cooking, and loud music.

PHILOSOPHY

If it can be known, practiced, or perfected, it's worth learning.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

At present, I mostly prefer the get togethers. I live with my girlfriend in a fairly small place, so it's pretty difficult to host.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

To date, I've mosty hosted (while I lived in Berlin) and been to some local events, but I am working on changing that.

Interests

Aikido, Concerts (see below), Cooking (vegetarian), Strong Beers (anything 6%+), History (esp. History of Science), Museums, Natural Sciences (esp. Chemistry and Physics), Day Hikes, Amateur Philosophy/Sociology (preferably with drinks)

Music, Movies, and Books

Punk, Metal, Rockabilly, Industrial, and selections from more mainstream "alternative." My father also left me with a nostalgic love for some 60s/70s rock.

When it comes to books and movies, I like things that show the hidden sides of life that are subtly disturbing, e.g. Little Miss Sunshine, American Beauty, Crumb, Magic Seeds, Waiting for the Barbarians, early William Gibson, etc... I also like a good tongue in cheek or black comedy. Long live British humor.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I've interviewed four different Nobel laureates in the natural sciences--each one as impressive for their individuality as their intellect. I've also had the opportunity to practice with (and be thrown by) three direct students of the founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba.

Countries I’ve Visited

Austria, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Portugal, United Kingdom

Countries I’ve Lived In
