About Me

Home-grown Alaskan, but global citizen.
After living the life of a dedicated student-athlete in college, I spent several years vagabonding around Latin America, Western Europe, and South-East Asia meeting loads of amazing people, learning more than I ever thought possible, living for each moment, and getting hooked on the feeling of pure freedom felt by someone with a redefined sense of "home." The closest thing to home for me now would be our family's small cabin back in Alaska, where I occasionally return to clear my head and rekindle my love for the mountains, but more often you can find me trying to eke by in various locations abroad.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I joined CouchSurfing in 2007 during my first independent trip abroad. My spur-of-the-moment cycling trip along the east coast of Spain was greatly aided and enhanced by fellow couch surfers. Each and every person that hosted me (in Spain & Ireland) was absolutely wonderful, generous, curious, welcoming, vibrant, etc... in summation: open-hearted and open-minded.

Interests

Outdoor activities, off-trail adventures, & recreational sports (soccer, biking, kayaking, hiking, spelunking, surfing, etc..)
Music; live music creates a beautiful energy. I don't really play any specific instruments, but I love to be a groovy groupie...

Music, Movies, and Books

Movies: I love foreign/independent films (Amelie, The Orange Thief), epic adventures (Into the Wild), angst filled 80's flicks (Sixteen Candles, Ferris Beuller), and the occasional Asian soap drama.
Music: Just about anything with heart... (Kate Nash, The Postal Service, Regina Spektor, Rufus Wainwright, Snow Patrol, Sigur Ros, Cake, Carla Bruni, Coldplay, Jack Johnson, Damien Rice, Death Cab for Cutie, Bright Eyes, The Weepies, The Fugees, Citizen Cope, Eddie Vedder, Fun., the Super Saturated Sugar Strings ...).
Books: Life of Pi, Perks of Being a Wallflower, Sofie's World, Miles From Nowhere, anything by David Sedaris or Paul Theroux.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Not to be pretentious, but the world is truly an amazing place and there really are too many amazing things to account for them all...
- Falling in the love among the glittering waters of a phosphorescent tides despite the teeming, polluted, sometimes-hostile port city of Makassar, Sulawesi.
- Pedaling along the dark jungle road in time to watch the sun rise over the majestic silhouettes of Angkor Wat.
- Swimming alongside gargantuan whale sharks off Leyte Island, Philippines.
- Hiking through the night along the perilous ridge to watch an surreal sunrise on Mount Huashan, China.
- Peeking out of my tent flap to admire the vast blanket of stars outlined by the jutting mountain ridges, lullabied by the jovial singing of Mongolians drunk off of fermented mare's milk in Terelj Park.
- Cycling 350 kilometers from Barcelona to Valencia, on an impromptu tour down the east coat of Spain!
- Paddling back out for "one last wave" at 'La Punta' in Montanita, Ecuador.
- Scrambling to visit all the ruins and sights atop Machu Picchu, Peru before nightfall.
- Cruising along Anchorage's Spencer Loop or Coastal Trail on an icy evening, by the light of the moon.
- Late evenings with a few good beers and mates atop of Edinburgh's own Arthur's Seat.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach you how to knit a scarf. I can show you photos and stories of Alaska, to spread the knowledge that it's not a desolate ice block nor an western island floating below Hawaii. I can dance with you until sunrise. I can listen and encourage. I can juggle a soccer ball with you, but not very well. I can find interest in little things. I can share travel tips. I can bake you scrumptious things (if I have access to an oven). I can sit quietly and watch the sunset with you. I can do all this and more if you share with me a little piece of your world.
