About Me

Hey! I'm an American currently living in the Bordeaux area (until May) on a gap year teaching English to local middle schoolers. Afterwards, I plan on returning home to begin a PhD in theoretical linguistics. I absolutely love traveling, and I'm deeply interested in history, culture, and language (of course!). I also spend way too much time watching shows on Netflix (currently, that's Brooklyn 99, The Good Place, and a Star Trek marathon), and I love reading books of all sorts. In a new place, I enjoy walking around, walking into random restaurants and bookshops, having a beer at a chill bar, taking public transport, and meeting new people.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I usually stay in hostels when traveling on my own, but I feel as if couchsurfing would be a way to actually meet locals and experience things outside of the tourist bubble. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm hoping that I will get to before I return to the States in May! And of course, if you ever come visit me in America, I'd love to host you and/or show you around :)

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: Gorillaz, Lo-fi music, trashy pop music from the 2000s and the 90s... Not super refined. But I love going out to bars (and occasionally clubs) and singing/dancing along!

Movies: Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, Spaceballs, Breathless, Pulp Fiction, Idiocracy, MCU...

Books: Almost too many to count! I really like deep, world-building sci-fi (think Dune, Foundation, Hyperion Saga, Ender's Game), magic realism type stuff (Garcia Marquez, Murakami), surrealism (Kafka's Parables, Gogol's The Nose, and post-modern stuff (Cloud Atlas), but I'm open to all sorts of recommendations! I also have been trying to put some effort into reading philosophy, history, anthropology, etc.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I spent a month living in Guatemala doing academic research relating to the Kaqchikel Maya language spoken in my area. Ask me more if you're curious!

What I Can Share with Hosts

Good conversation (I hope!) in English or French or Spanish (well, I'll try on that last one, at least), I could bring you some wine or sweets from Bordeaux if you're interested, and I'd love to buy you a beer or a meal!
