About Me

CURRENT MISSION

in Beijing

ABOUT ME

I enjoy meeting new people. I listen closely, and have a few stories to tell too. I am up for anything you want to do, so long as it is ridiculously fun. I will get all of your jokes. I will also buy you a drink. Unless I'm hosting you, in which case you can buy me a drink.

I've joined here because I am going on a seven week trip, overland from Oxford to live in Beijing, through Europe, Russia and Mongolia. I'm looking for some friendly hospitality and good times on the way ... and when I'm arrived, my couch is your couch.

UPDATE: I am now in Beijing without being kidnapped or murdered along the way, and can host you I hope.

PHILOSOPHY

Jean Cocteau said life is a horizontal fall. Someone else said life was a bitch. I'm somewhere in between the two.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

First time. Please don't throttle me in my sleep.

Interests

I read a lot, and like talking about books.

I play the piano. If you have a keyboard, and get me drunk, I will you play you some jazz or "Moonlight Sonata".

I do qigong and tai chi. This would explain it if you wake up and see me prancing about in slow motion like an idiot.

I'd love to listen to your travel stories.

Music, Movies, and Books

Movies: Jules et Jim
Music: Debussy to dubstep
Books: Good ones

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I roasted the very onions that Cyrus ate on the day that Babylon fell. It was my twin sister who was chosen to be sealed into the Pyramid. I broached the Great Wall of China from the north. I returned with the first gunpowder that the west had ever seen or heard, wrapped in peices of silk taken from the Porcelain Tower of Nankin. I was the first worshipper at the Temple of Diana at Epheseus and the first Christian to outstare the lions at the Coliseum. In Epheseus I saw a woman branded for consorting with an elkhound; in Smyrna I stayed for the drying of the grape harvest; in Pergamos I ate the raw livers of goats, a delicacy, and contracted a tapeworm; in Thyatira I coaxed it out, sitting for ten days over a chamber of warm milk; in Sardis I gave my last piece of gold for a timber of the Ark, which crumbled to dust in my saddlebag.
