About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To get our new apartment renovated

ABOUT ME

The additional person in the profile picture is my girlfriend Anni. We're two people trying to make the transition from university studies to working life in Helsinki. Originally, we are from the countryside. People have described us as warm, welcoming, but nevertheless quite Finnish :)

Anni has a degree in ecology and has been working in Kuopio in addition to Helsinki. I'm trying to write my MSc thesis in computer science while working on medical software.

PHILOSOPHY

To learn to understand the world and to share that understanding, while experiencing life first-hand.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Hosting and surfing.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've surfed in Warsaw and Krakow, and traveled with other couchsurfers.

Interests

I love to expand my understanding of the world through in-depth discussions, all kinds of music, films and graphic novels. I often cook, play board games, read science fiction, or sit in a pub with my friends.

Anni is the outdoorswoman. When she isn't climbing, she takes photos of fascinating, tiny details she finds in the nature.

Music, Movies, and Books

I appreciate pretty much all music genres. Metal (Primordial, Insomnium), classical (Bach, Rzewski), progressive rock (Camel), folk (Pentangle), jazz (John Coltrane), electronic (Kraftwerk)...

Graphic novels by Alan Moore, especially From Hell. Weird, artsy Finnish comic books.

Films by Kubrick, Herzog, Bergman, Wong Kar-Wai. HBO TV series, such as The Wire. I also love some incredibly bad films you've never heard of.

I love most things science fiction, but especially Asimov's Foundation trilogy novels.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

In 2011, we were hiking in Lapland. The nature was awesome even while it rained most of the time.

Anni encountered a polar bear in Svalbard while carrying a rifle. That must be something.

For me, reading, watching or listening certain classics for the first time can be mind-blowing, as is playing a piece of music you previously thought was impossible for your skill level.

Teach, Learn, Share

Of course we know Finnish culture: locations, history, cuisine, traditions, hiking trails.

Other than that, I'm sure we can exchange our knowledge of films, music, comic books, and board games. And if you sincerely want it, I can teach the basics of the theory of computation and type theory.

Anni can take you climbing, and knows everything you need to know about the flora and fauna of Finland.

You should know that learning to ski takes at least a few days if you've never done it before. That said, there's a lot of fun to be had in the snow without skis.
