About Me

Just an eager musician, traveler, and extrovert looking to see the world. I love people and have no trouble throwing caution to the wind–in this light, couchsurfing looked to be like the right place for me. I'm a philosophical nerd sometimes, other times quiet and bookish, and still others an absolutely wild, energetic ball of optimism (and sometimes cynicism). It works out.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I need to get out. Between my work weeks rigid with academia and making organic smoothies, I always find myself itching to explore. I'll drive six hours this way, five hours that way–I'll visit old military forts or dark, deep night skies, just for the hell of it. On the shorter breaks, I'll climb up to a roof or two; my longer ones will see me taking a train halfway across the country. My goal now is to become more ambitious with it and really travel far, far away, and learn how to feasibly sustain myself while also never straying far from the road.

Interests

Music is what I was raised on and what I thrive off of, so right now I can play seven instruments proficiently (including vocals!). Hiking is fantastic, exploration is mandatory, and learning about new skills or concepts through doing or reading is also something I'm passionate about. Sense of adventure is through the roof–I'm always down to see or do something new, regardless of how ridiculous it's seems.

Music, Movies, and Books

Lately I've been getting into indie-folk singer-songwriter-type vibes with some cool jazz thrown in, but I've gone through hip-hop phases, post-rock phases, ambient phases, black metal phases, jazz phases–it all kind of mushes together nowadays. Throw anything at me and I'll learn to appreciate it and love it, hands down.

Always been an action fan, only because the movie theater was bonding time with my dad, but I'm nursing a budding passion for Tarantino right now. Otherwise, Brokeback Mountain stirred something deep.

First place goes to The Prophet, by Kahlil Gibran. Ta-nehisi Coates is a trip. I enjoyed Gabriel Garcia Marquez and would definitely read him again. Amy Hempel for school and pleasure, and Robert Frost is in my top three as far as poets are concerned.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I've been going on more adventures lately, but just recently a friend and I watched the sunrise from atop Mt. Monadnock. We booked it up the mountain–I brought my camera, some beef jerky, and a ratty blanket from Goodwill–and by five in the morning, we were at its summit. The night time was one of the most peaceful things I've ever felt, and the sunrise really transforms the landscape. It was during the autumn, too! Awesome stuff.

Teach, Learn, Share

Okay,

I can definitely give you some music lessons! I would lOVE to give beginners lessons for the drums, bass, guitar, piano, or vocals. Above teaching beginner's is just beyond me.

Here's one tip: when you're playing the drums, get those pointy index fingers out of there. Wrap 'em around the stick and loosen up the wrists. You'll look like you know what you're doing.

Charles Duhigg is trying to get me to be more productive, and Bob Dylan is trying to get me to be a couch surfing musician. Trying to learn how to be both?

I'd like to own a cat more than I would a dog, but I like dogs more than cats–instead of making the tough choice, I got a rat instead. Her name is Chyna.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I won't need a lot as far as sleeping arrangements go. I used to sleep on a couch every night in the summertime, and am pretty fond of them. Heavy sleeper, fast sleeper, neat living buddy, and not disruptive. I won't ever be planning to be staying any one place for long–tops three nights, most likely a night or two. I like to move around.
