Interests

I'm quite addicted to music, the weirder the better, though I am mostly partial to jazz. I am also a big reader and tend to be very well informed about things. I have a really wide variety of interests, which is both a blessing and a curse. My professional background is in urban planning and I did development planning in West Africa for a while before moving back to the states. I also very passionate about environmental and equity issues. Generally I'm good conversation. I have have a pet soccer addiction.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: Lot's and lots of jazz - Miles, Coltrane, Monk, Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy, also a lot of obscura from all over the world. I have a really big West African highlife collection and am really into Middle Eastern Music from the 50s-70s and the more psychedelic Thai Pop. I'm a jazz guitar player and really also like stuff in the John Fahey, Sir Richard Bishop vain. I worked in a record store all through college so their isn't a lot that I'm not at least passingly familiar with.

Movies: Withnail & I, F For Fake, 8 1/2, Kurosawa Films, French New Wave, Blade Runner, mostly foreign and art films or ridiculous sci-fi action movies.

Books: "The Savage Detectives" - Roberto Bolano, anything by Borges, "The Death and Life of Great American Cities" - Jane Jacobs, "Pity the Nation" by Robert Fisk, Kafka, Nabokov, I'm a big reader and I can rattle off titles all day.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I met the late Colonel Qaddafi once (while in Ghana), which was a little bit mind blowing in and of itself. I have some a lot of good stories from my travels.

Teach, Learn, Share

I know a bit about a lot of stuff - I tend to research things to death once I develop an interest in them. I'm very good at talking about history and philosophic ideas, and well, music. I am a decent guitar player, handy at things like bicycle repair, a pretty good cook and
