About Me

CURRENT MISSION

to stay in Amsterdam til July

ABOUT ME

I think mostly people would say different things, I feel like my character changes, adapts to the different places and people that I'm with. The things that remain constant however are that I am an ovo-vegetarian, a philosophy student, (that's a little too constant, I'm trying to finish my thesis) and I love new ideas but I fear I'm still learning how to listen to people. I try to be positive, optimistic, and view life humorously, though I have my dark moments. I'm very English too, I miss my tea.

PHILOSOPHY

Harmony, a balance of opposites, innocence and wisdom, grace and strength, childishness and sensibility, confidence and humility, bravery and fear, masculinity and femininity. I believe you can be all of these things, and many more, at once and that their harmonies should be striven for. The best kinds of people own both a tool-box and a make-up-box, know how to look after themselves, but haven't forgotten how to have fun in the rain.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

BUSY WRITING THESIS - If I don't reply i'm sorry i've got a lot on at the moment!

Thank you CS for helping me out whilst I found Accomodation!
I will be putting my couch up on here as soon as I get one.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I have stayed on friends couches and new acquaintances couches. The best times where the blanket forts I made with my friend and long time rescuer.

Interests

Art and culture, the time we live in, the Zeitgeist. I'm very interested in the development of culture, society and humanity. My thesis will be arguing against the idea that theres a universal taste, a correct idea of beauty. I feel very strongly that we are a product of our time, environment, parents, television, and our aspirations, fears, hopes and dreams, morality and ideals of beauty are shaped by this. I don't mean to suggest that we don't have a say, we can't change, we're pre-determined, but it is very hard for us to step outside of our world when a lot of us don't give it a second thought. These are the ideas I am playing with at the moment, I spend most of my time thinking about them.

I'm an amateur photographer and want to learn guitar.

Music, Movies, and Books

Movies: Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind, Memento, Old Boy, Pi, Delicatessen, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Exit through the Gift Shop, Qatsi-trilogy, Blade Runner, Das Boot

Music: Everything from Slipknot and Skrillex, Bach's cello suits and Arvo Part to K-Pop and Britney Spears.

Books: I'd be ashamed to admit to the length of my to-read list, I had a late start in life being Dyslexic, and after studying Philosophy, Philosophical texts became my reading material. A lot of them are very accessible though. Everyone should read Satre - "Existenalism is a Humanism", Plato - "Symposium", Schopenhauer - "On the Sufferings of the World" (in order, to get the real sting of the essay on Women), Kant - "What Is Enlightenment" and Nietzsche - "Beyond Good and Evil"

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I just watched a mini swarm of starlings in Rembrandtpark which made my day. I'd always wanted to see their marvellous flight performance but didn't think i would ever be lucky enough to catch it by chance.

I think learning to read is possibly one of the only 'amazing' things i've done. I'm dyslexic so the written language doesn't come naturally to me. It still amazes me how the human mind reads words, and its apparent to me every time I try because my brain does it so badly! The fact that, like all sensory input, we only register 20%, we only read the beginning middle and end letter for instance, then our minds make up the rest and we move on to the next word. I thought the word "siege" was "sledge" today, only I thought they'd spelt it "Slege". I thought I was just confusing American and English, but no, upon reading the article, I realised it was "siege". I would have sworn it said "sledge". That amazes me.
