Seeing the sights superficially as a visitor without a local connection to the people feels like a shallow and dissatisfying way to experience a place. I would much rather stay in a part of town I may not have picked, see what it is like to live locally through whatever window of insight my host shares, and experience places through organic adventure instead of as a series of commercial transactions on the free market mediating what I am supposed to experience and how.
