One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Two pretty great simple moments

Once I was the last person to get on the chairlift up a snowy mountain in the east of Australia. I had a snowboard strapped to my foot. I had only recently mastered the technique of 'turning', and so slowly slowly, I meandering down the perfectly silent, perfectly white, mountain; the golden setting sun at my side, casting a long shadow of me, to my other side. It was brilliant.

Another day I caught a train from Oslo to Hamar, Norway, to see a project by architect Sverre Fehn. I followed the waters edge to the end of a peninsular, where I met the museum curator (museum was closed at this time of the year). He let me in to wander. The project was beautiful, elegant. After several hours I found myself unable to feel my hands and feet, and finally retreated into the small office of the curator, who kindly made me a small cup of hot coffee and I sat huddled over it for about half an hour, letting the steam return feeling to my extremities.
