Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I'm on here to shrink the world. Couchsurfing has brought me into contact with many fun and interesting people whether I am the traveler or they are. I look forward to every guest as an opportunity to learn more about the world. I'm also dedicated to shaving costs in sustainable ways, and really enjoy providing accommodations for guests who are budget-minded in addition to saving my own money when on work or personal trips.

Music, Movies, and Books

I have been moved by several books, but The Overstory by Richard Powers stands out as a recent influential read, in addition to Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis. John Dies at the End is my favorite playful fiction, and there is a small, fun book of poetry called North to Superior that I have taken a liking to.

When it comes to TV shows or movies, I am a definite fan of quality over quantity; many people have been surprised by things that I have not seen. That said, I have been struck by several films and generally am game to watch anything that will blow my mind. A sampling of recent flicks that I loved: Inside Out, Free Solo, The Dark Knight, and Shutter Island.

It's difficult to find music I don't appreciate, but I'm particularly fond of music that is unintrusive and introspective. Electronic and instrumental music tends to fit this bill, but I've also got an appetite for rock and metal. I keep a soundcloud account with "likes" (alhirzel), and here are a few recent finds/faves: Kiasmos, Nils Frahm, Plini, Tycho

Teach, Learn, Share

For anyone I host in Houghton, I would love to show you the mountain biking trails, waterfalls and beautiful scenery, ski or hike. If you are able to give some heads-up and be a little flexible, I can give you a tour in any season that will be the highlight of your visit.

As a guest, I am communicative and flexible. I love sharing music and experiences and my own little ideas about what is good in the world. I'm pretty handy too, so if you need a spare set of hands for a project, fair trade!
