Music, Movies, and Books
The best that ever happened in my music life (I was the drummer) is this review:
YOUNG PEOPLE WITH FACES - Same LP (Rapid Pulse Rec.) 11,90 Euro - HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
YOUNG PEOPLE WITH FACES are four (three girls and a guy) 17-year-olds. The group's influences are all over this LP. "Sick Girl" (the best song on the album) recalls The AVENGERS. "Piece of Meat" brings to mind early STOOGES. "Getting Hit On" could pass for an outtake from the first BLONDIE LP. "Unlovable People" sounds like Dangerhouse-era X. And after hearing the '77 punk tribute number "IHateYou," you damn well know that at least one member of this band owns the BUZZCOCKS' Spiral Scratch 7". This Limd. 300 LP is perfect - "kinda crude, but (we hope) still pretty rockin'." Yep, that nails it. With its no-frills three-chord bashing and simple lyrics articulating the teenage experience, it's the kind of album you would have expected four 17-year-olds to crank out 30 years ago. It just warms my heart to know that there's a group of teenagers in the middle of Idaho obsessing over the old punk music I hold so dear. BUY OR BUY!!!
Almost Famous, Eternal Sunshine, and Amelie for MPDGs. American Beauty for highest view count. Bringing up Baby for Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant. Cinema Paradiso for scratchy, abandoned prints. City of God, High Fidelity, and Run Lola Run for nonlinear narrative. Death Proof as my real favorite. The Iron Giant and Waltz with Bashir. It's a Wonderful Life. Let the Right One In. Stranger than Fiction for Will Ferrell Surprise.
Big Trouble and The Princess Bride for cracking up. The Round House for endearing humiliations of male adolescents. The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down for investigative journalism. The Time Traveler's Wife for Chicago. Chicken with Plums representing all comics. Half the Sky = my politics.

You cannot point out a star to someone without putting your other hand on his shoulder.
- S. Yizhar, "Midnight Convoy," quoted in To the End of the Land.
There are only two questions that human beings have ever fought over, all through history: How much do you love me, and who's in charge? Everything else is somehow manageable.
-Quoted by Elizabeth Gilbert
You go from the north of Laos and then you go across the Mekong (River), and when the Pathet soldiers fire, you do not think about your family, just yourself only. When you are on the other side, you will not be like what you were before you get through the Mekong. On the other side, you cannot say to your wife, I love you more than my life. She saw! And when you try to restick this thing together, it is like putting glue on broken glass.
- Blia Yao Moua, quoted in The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down
You get work however you get work, but people keep working (...) because the work is good, and because they're easy to get along with, and because they deliver the work on time. And you don't even need all three. Two out of three is fine.
- Neil Gaiman, 2012 Commencement Speech, University of the Arts
Never worry about a bad thing happening, because if you worry and the bad thing doesn't happen, you've suffered for no reason, but if you worry and it does happen, you've suffered it twice.
-Mark Twain
Everything was Beautiful, and Nothing Hurt.
-Billy Pilgrim
Because every man's will, and every desire, and inclination proceedeth from some cause, and that from another cause, in a continuall chain (...) they proceed from necessity. So that to him that could see the connexion of those causes, the necessity of all men's voluntary actions, would appeare manifest.
-Hobbes
