About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Exploration of whatever piques my interest

ABOUT ME

I like to think of myself as a free spirit tethered far to often by responsibilities. The goal for this year is to stop telling myself "no" as much and start asking "why not?" I love meeting new people and trying new things.

I'm a musician (by hobby) and a designer (by career) and everything else is just pieces of other people that I've met along the way who've made me a better person.

As you can tell from my pictures, I love the water. Most of my travel is planned around being around it. There's something about the waves and the sand that helps me find my center.

PHILOSOPHY

Be happy: It's not going to be all the time, but the sum of the moments of contentment should be greater than the sum of the moments of frustration and self-doubt.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

When I can, I like to travel as light and spontaneously as possible. There's something to be said for going where the spirit takes you, and I love the idea of meeting new people.

I moved to Detroit about a year ago and have met so many great people in the CS community, both people who hosted me and people I've met along the way (including my wife, Trisha). We have a 7 year old and an infant together, and we'd be open to hosting other young adventurers.

We're now hosting, although our time is somewhat limited. We can't accept couch requests with less than 1 week notice. I'm not really free to show you bars and that sort of thing, but I enjoy exploring the city and other attractions and can point you toward a few good ones I've discovered in my short time here.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I couchsurfed for two weeks with various people when I first moved to Detroit. Met a ton of cool people and started going to the monthly potlucks (including hosting the August potluck). We've also couchsurfed in Atlanta, Savanah, and Toronto, and I'll be traveling to San Francisco in April.

When I travel I always like to go somewhere with friends nearby. The best part of traveling is when someone who lives there can show you the hidden gems in their city or community.

I'm not hosting right now, because we are preparing to move again.

Interests

Alternative and electronica music, art galleries, community theater, improv comedy, tabletop gaming and conversations over food are great ways to fill the spaces in between life's demands. My favorite hobbies involve meeting new people and exchanging ideas, food and art.

Music, Movies, and Books

I love live music. Most of what I listen to on my own is sort of alternative (read: hipster). But when I'm out I enjoy a lot of different things. Electronica in a crowded dive bar with a great vibe can create the best environment.

Most of what I read is dystopian future (Brave New World, 1984, The Road) and fantasy novels (J.R.R. Tolkien, George R.R. Martin, Jacqueline Carey).

As for movies, mostly just bad horror movies (Ever seen Gingerdeadman? Or the movie about zombie sheep?). And musicals. And horror movies that are also musicals.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

- Getting married on an island in the middle of the Detroit River between the USA and Canada
- Taking the trail up to the top of chimney rock and overlooking the Appalachian Mountains
- An impromptu pub crawl through the East Village in New York
- Climbing a waterfall in Jamaica
- Any time spent on the beach in the middle of the night

Teach, Learn, Share

Anyone with an open mind and strong debate can teach you something. I enjoy talking to people whether I agree with them or not because only through debate can you examine your own ideals.

Teach: Music, photography, science, cooking

Learn: I'm pretty open to learning anything new

Share: Ideas, food, inspiration

What I Can Share with Hosts

I'm a pretty great cook and enjoy discussions over food.

Countries I’ve Visited
