About Me

CURRENT MISSION

I enjoy good stories; if the use of my couch enables you to tell a good story and live an interesting life, I am a better person for it.

ABOUT ME

I am fascinated by the ways that we humans use language to organize and respond to the peoples and things around us, and by the moments when we confront the inadequacies of language to say what we mean.

PHILOSOPHY

I try to find beauty in my connections with people and spaces.

Interests

Bicycling, footwear, theories of translation, language acquisition, behavioral economics, olive oil, coffee, sinking my teeth into a gooey brownie, all things edible or drinkable, really. Also, I've never met a pastry that didn't interest me.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

* my sisters: every day, all the time
* finding case studies of Andean women who discovered mines, ran silver refineries, and formed their own mining companies in the 17th c., and sharing those stories with my colleagues and students
* watching students change their minds and develop more nuanced modes of thinking over the short course of a semester -- it is absolutely amazing and inspiring to see what young people can do when we create conditions for meaningful learning, and I am eternally grateful for the opportunity to make this happen
