Also important to me: delicious food prepared with care; music of all kinds; the natural beauty of nature; not being too serious.

For music, some of the many possibilities include Beethoven piano sonatas; Mahler symphonies; anything Bach; blues as only Billie Holiday can sing 'em; Bill Evans' jazz piano sketches; Indian sitar-and-tabla meditations; old-school funk; mellow indie; or great Canadian bands like Arcade Fire or the Hip

Movies: some favourites are Lars and the Real Girl; Moulin Rouge for its sheer exuberance; Dan in Real Life for its honesty; most anything with Dustin Hoffman or Meryl Streep. I also love foreign films and don't often watch Hollywood blockbusters. I volunteer at the local film fest every year.

Books: I've usually got five or six on the go, ranging from social studies to fiction to memoir. I also love modern and ancient poetry.
