About Me

First in English, and at the end in Spanish-
Primero escribi en Ingles y luego en Castellano.

I have dreamt of taking long trips all my life, the normal 2-week holiday was never enough. Soon after my 29th birthday I decided it was time to stop dreaming and take action. I did some budgeting and after accepting that going through all my savings wouldn’t kill me I took a 6 month break in south-east Asia. (and thus the love affair with Asia began).

10 years have passed since I stepped on that first plane with nothing but my backpack and a thirst to know the world. I have since visited countless different countries, and lived and worked as an English teacher in four of them.

Currently I'm living in Sassari. I've been here since September but I haven't really managed to explore this beautifil island yet, so now my contract finishes in June I'm in a hurry to do so.

Besides the above, the fundamentals of who I am could be summarized as: the product of a Chilean father and Mozambican mother I grew up in both countries and don’t remember the first time I was on a plane. I attended international schools, which basically means I always knew there was a BIG world out there plus I have friends from all over. Consequently I’m fluent in 3 languages (Spanish, Portuguese and English) yet I don’t think any of them could be labeled my mother tongue.

And lastly I will add that I used to believe that one of my defining characteristics was that I was an avid reader. Yet, recently I've spent far longer on Netflix than with my nose in a book. Not sure I like what that says about me but it is what it is.

If you want to know more about me you can read about some of my trips on my blog. If I'm honest, I'm not very good at updating it but it's better than nothing right?

Castellano:

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

After years of hearing wonders about couch surfing I decided to give it a shot and, put bluntly, fell in love with it!

Every single time I have used it, wether surfing or hosting, has been an incredible experience. In other words: 1. meeting like minded people with whom to share experiences, ideas, plans, maps, etc. has been the icing on the cake of all my trips since I started CSing.
2. Hosting people, listening to their stories and seeing my town through their eyes, when I was stuck at home working to raise funds for my next long trip, was the only thing that kept me sane!

Music, Movies, and Books

Movies: Dead Poets Society; Grave of the Fireflies; Cinema Paradiso; Mary Poppins; The Lives of Others; El Secreto de sus Ojos (The secret in their eyes); Howl's Moving Castle; Nausicaa of the valley of the Wind;
Book: The Velveteen Rabbit; The little Prince; La Soledad de los Numeros Primos ; Americanah; Ru ; The Book Thief; Cien Años de Soledad; The power of One; Les Miserables; The wheel of Time; every book written by Mia Couto, Torey L. Hayden, Roald Dahl, Oscar Wilde; and so many more...

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Growing up my sister would say that the biscuits I bake are amazing however my mom would say the mess I left the kitchen in was amazing... (I promise that I've since learnt to keep a clean kitchen!)

I recently completed a 3000 piece jigsaw puzzle in 7 days. Does that count?

A few years ago I swam with whale sharks.

No? more serious stuff then? Ok, I volunteered with The Chilean Voluntary Psychologist in the immediate aftermath of the 8.8 Earthquake that struck Chile in 2010. It was a unique experience I simply can't describe.

More recent? Well, I lived in China for 2 years and hardly learnt any Mandarin so either I'm very dumb (which could be) or Mandarin really is the hardest language to learn. Either way I find it amazing (and sad) that I didn't pick up more of the language in my time there...

Also while talking about China it has to be mentioned that my first year there I lived in a remote town where I was the only foreigner. That truly was amazing!!!

Teach, Learn, Share

I love baking biscuits so I could easily share and teach my favourite recipes...
Board games are always fun and you can't play alone so ...

I have a HUGE ebook library that I'm more than happy to share with everyone.

Stories. Stories of my trips, the places I've lived, the adventures I've had... some terrifying and others simply hilarious.

What I Can Share with Hosts

isn't this basically the same as the "Teach, learn, Share" above??? Sorry, but I don't really get the difference...
I guess Time is something I didn't include above and I would definitely want to share with people hosting me. After all, thats the whole point of Couchsurfing right?
