Music, Movies, and Books
Right now, I'm really into reading everything these humans have written: Salman Rushdie, Elena Ferrante, Virginia Woolf, Ian McEwan, John Irving, Kurt Vonnegut Jr., David Foster Wallace, Orwell's nonfiction. And autobiographies of the long-dead. And short stories by Russians. Also poetry: Wallace Stevens, Stanley Kunitz, RM Rilke, Theodore Roethke, WB Yeats, Philip Larkin. And I love recommendations-- they're indispensable in finding new authors to love.
I like music, too-- right now crazy for The Mountain Goats, Tocotronic, Boards of Canada, My Morning Jacket, Hayden, and Mr. Bungle.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I lived in the cloud forests of Maquipucuna, Ecuador and later, the flooded headwaters of the Amazon for six weeks completely nude and barefoot with only a machete, a mosquito net, a fire starter, a cast net, and a few fish hooks. . I built my own shelter and water filter, and lived a hunter-gatherer lifestyle. That was pretty cool.
Also, having lived in Coastal Georgia, I have seen a good deal of the ocean and the small tributaries that flow into the marsh, which are populated by dolphins and manatees. Once, I saw manatees mating. Yes, that is correct: I saw manatees in a love embrace. And it was... AWESOME.
Teach, Learn, Share
I want to learn how to mix some delicious, mean, exotic cocktails that I can whip up at home or work whenever someone I'm serving looks indecisive. If you or your country has a specialty drink (and I know that you do/it does), I want to learn how to make it in the most authentic way possible. And then I want to share it with people!
