About Me

Archaeologist, photographer, tourist guide and occasional writer.
Live in the village of Quoyloo, Orkney Islands - just off the far northeast corner of Scotland.
From Devon, England but have lived in Scotland since 1990, Orkney since 2004.
(Hmm - 'Countries I've Lived In' has UK and England as options, yet not Scotland. Tsk Tsk)
Married to Fran, custodian of the fabulous St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall.
No children, but four cats who count as family, and are higher maintenance, arguably.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

House is tiny, as are sofa(s), but accpeting guests not out of the question. Better like cats though...
Have work lined up in Glasgow soon and will be looking for somewhere to stay to make it affordable and worth taking it on...
Also heading to London and elsewhere to visit archives, museums etc for research towards various projects including study of Orkney's wartime history, culminating in a book or two. Hopefully.

Interests

Photography, music, history (particularly WWI/WWII).
Making curry. Eating curry.

Music, Movies, and Books

Spend most of time deep in archival documents and non-fiction these days, but used to read a lot of fiction. The late, great Iain M. Banks among others. Very little that is set in the present day now I come to think of it - a lot of historical fiction or futuristic stuff.
Most types of music - very eclectic mix. A quick glance at music collection in iTunes reveals it would take 30 days to listen to it all. Used to DJ in Edinburgh - that was hip-hop/funk/disco/reggae. But grew up a rock type - Zappa/Beffheart end of things, less mainstream. Still do the occasional disco DJ set for parties - strictly vinyl sets!

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Amazingnessness is in the eye of the beholder...
But flying a glider solo for first time was quite memorable.

What I Can Share with Hosts

A bit of interesting conversation. And a good veg curry!
