About Me

ATTENTION!!! - I can no longer access the email associated with this account, and it won't let me change it because I've also forgotten my password (I normally just log in with Facebook :/). This means if you send me a request to stay with me through the site I WILL NOT receive an email about it! I'm still happy to host people though; if you want to stay with me for a time, please email me your request at andrewdoris1@gmail.com for a more prompt response and I'll see what I can do!

CURRENT MISSION

“I shall pass this way but once; any good, therefore, that I can do or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.” – Unknown

ABOUT ME

If you asked about me, my friends would tell you I'm an amiable, witty guy who's really into sports and politics. My family would tell you I'm driven, hard working and mature. I'd tell you I'm happy, easy to get along with and excited to meet you.

And as you can tell, I like quotes.

"I not only use all the brains that I have, but all that I can borrow."€--Woodrow Wilson

PHILOSOPHY

Politics: Libertarian
"I believe each individual is naturally entitled to do as he pleases with himself and the fruits of his labor so far as it in no way interferes with any other man'€™s rights." - Abraham Lincoln
Religion: Christian
"€œMy religion consists of a humble admiration of the illimitable superior spirit who reveals himself in the slight details we are able to perceive with our frail and feeble mind." -€“ Albert Einstein
"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you"--Luke 6:31
“People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered. Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway. If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway. What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway. The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway. Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway. For you see in the end, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.” – Written on the wall of Mother Teresa’s children’s home in Calcutta, India.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I participate by pursuing my passions, and helping others when I can.

“Do more than belong: participate. Do more than care: help. Do more than believe: practice. Do more than be fair: be kind. Do more than forgive: forget. Do more than dream: work.” - William Arthur Ward

Whatever it is I'm doing, I try to do it in a principled and ethical manner. It’s important for me to follow my beliefs.

“To know what is right and not do it is the worst cowardice.” – Confucius

“If we are facing the right direction, all we have to do is keep on walking”—Buddhist Proverb

One specific way I participate is through a group called CISV. CISV is a children's travel organization designed to instill tolerance an intercultural awareness at an early age. I had the privilege of travelling with CISV as a kid, and as an adult I've been a leader on three trips myself. It's a fantastic organization - definitely look into it if you have kids and want them to grow up as citizens of the world.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've couch-surfed in Paris and Amsterdam, and hosted several times in Baltimore and Destin, Florida. All good experiences! Living in Florida through August 2019 and happy to hist there too.

Interests

In my free time I love writing, reading, eating, playing cards or board games with friends and family, watching good movies, watching sports, and of course sleeping! I also have a passion for politics and love talking about them - respectfully - with anyone.

Music, Movies, and Books

I love to read engaging, funny, moving or thought provoking books..

"Those who do not read are no better off than those who cannot." --Chinese Proverb

..but not boring ones that drone on and on:

€œ"This is not a novel to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force."€“ Dorothy Parker

I have similar criteria for movies. Some of my favorites are Forrest Gump, Schindlers List, Hotel Rwanda, Saving Private Ryan, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Pay it Forward, anything with Liam Neeson, and anything directed by Steven Spielberg or Quentin Tarantino.

I adore music, and have an eclectic and diverse taste, but my favorite genre is probably classic rock. I also enjoy rap, rock, pop, classical, alternative, country, epic, oldies, metal, R&B, reggae, EDM, like I said pretty much everything haha.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Something I've SEEN that's amazing: Les Miserables, the musical. It is absolutely fantastic. I have all the music on my iPod and it still moves me every time I listen to it.
