ABOUT ME

According to my sisters and my mom, "He's a trailblazer!"

Pronouns: HE/HIM/HIS. I am kind, gay, honest, clean, artistic, respectful, energetic, fun, sassy, a good dancer, a great drinker, conversational, independent, great cook, proficient outdoors man, and addicted traveler. I am a genuine Minnesotan - raised on a farm in a small town ( < 2,000 people) with an international twist. Professionally trained to be an environmental scientist with an equally strong training as an artist. I am a DJ and mainly do big parties (100 - 500 people). I have worn a beard of live bees, been swept out to sea nearly to my death, and lived three years of my life in a house of 30 men and women (cooperative housing).

Currently live and work remotely in Los Angeles in DTLA and I am happier than I've ever been. I love this city.

Previously lived in Brazil for two years where I : taught english, wrote as a travel journalist for the Star Tribune, completed my thesis on soil and flood prediction modeling, worked at a boutique hotel in Rio De Janeiro during World Cup, and filmed a documentary throughout Brazil over the course of 90 days. It got picked up by Al Jazeera Green News and that's partially how I transitioned into film production. If you want to learn how to make documentaries or distribute content I can help.

Formerly lived three years of my life in a housing cooperative with 30 other men and women of ages ranging from 17 to 31. If you're interested in cooperative living I have your answers. Having been raised on an isolated farm then moving into that house taught me to be a compassionate and thoughtful person and reminded me how different all humans are and how a small group of people can accomplish more than anyone can fathom. I have held a variety of responsibilities at the house including vice president and recruitment manager.

Grew up in Scandia, Minnesota which is a rural farming community rich in Swedish immigrant history. I grew up on a large farm and spent most of my time outdoors enjoying nature when I wasn't butchering chickens, driving tractors or trapping gophers. The farm which was settled by my Swedish great grandparents, is still in our family reaching its 5th generation!

Speaking about my sexuality with others is a joy. It's fun to get in the mind of another person no matter how different they are. Do you think sexuality is fluid?

PHILOSOPHY
3) Chin up, stay positive, don't be afraid.
2)Treat others as you would like to be treated. I mean it.
1) You better leave it how you found it or better!

"You will die but the carbon will not; its career does not end with you. It will return to the soil, and there a plant may take it up again in time, sending it once more on a cycle of plant and animal life." --Jacob Bronowski

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Hosted many people in my lifetime and plan on continuing it. Being a part of the couchsurfing community is an amazing privilege that everyone should embrace!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Enjoy taking people out and showing them what makes my state and my city unique. I enjoy comparing cultures, languages, life styles in general.

Interests

I like having my thoughts and opinions challenged. I thrive off of learning about what makes people unique then drawing that out and discussing it. I love giving compliments and making people laugh. If you choose to stay with me I will probably ask a million questions about your life and the place you're from.

I am an artist through to the core and always have been although I've done many things along the way. I've been drawing and painting my entire life. Acting since I was 9 and recently took on film production which seems to be the strongest channel of my creative energy so far. I ran art gallery tours in Chicago which felt great to direct tourists to galleries and artists that they wouldn't have known about. As I age I anticipate being more involved in the arts and giving back.

Brazil/South and Central America, Science everything, career stuff, Honeybee keeping, Scuba diving, music, drinking wine and beer, modern and classical art, reading, wildlife, physical sciences, film, sexuality, conversation, coffee/tea, dancing, skinny dipping, bonfires, hiking, etc.

Music, Movies, and Books

~ Movies ~
I love cinema and film makers from Italy and Spain. French films can drive me a bit mad but I do have a few favorites. I enjoy some of the work thats come out of Germany over the years. I'd say I am drawn mostly to documentary but when it comes to a feature or narrated film I'd say that I do enjoy USA produced/directed work. I'll always be a die hard Tarantino and Wes Anderson fan though I know so much of the USA cinema is highly commercial and rose tinted. Oh well, I am an optimist and I always will be.

~ Books ~
I an imaginative person that doesn't seek out fiction but rather, reads a lot of technical non-fiction or biographies. I am always reading like three books. Most recently, "Overbooked". Not a huge fiction person because I have enough of that in my mind already. I read a lot of books about improving life.

~ Music ~
My music tastes go in cycles and I seem to add new artists once a year. I am drawn to raw vocals and instrumentals around the world . It explains why I am drawn to cinema. I can listen to and appreciate anything.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I backpacked across Brazil for 90 days in some very remote areas filming my documentary. I have wild stories.

I am a stereotypical American in the sense that I am pretty easily excited/impressed but I do think I am unique in the sense that I see individuality everywhere.

I would say Scuba Diving is always a surreal experience that people can only really understand if they do it. It truly boggles the mind and spirit.

Imagine feeling weightless in an endless vacuum where little light reaches you causing everything to appear in shades of blue and green. Your body floats and your heart slows. Every living thing around you lives its entire life underwater and you are the visitor. The surface appears as the inverse of water we see from the shore. If I could live underwater I would.

Hiking 80 miles in Brazil with my research team ~*~*~*~ spiritualllll and bloody!

Also, I don't have a picture of it but I once wore a beard of live bees, It's a great story! Don't worry I didn't get stung they were calm.

Teach, Learn, Share

I know a lot about experiencing death and what sexuality can mean. Lately I am into ageism and sexism and feminism. That's serious though so we can always just hop in my car and hit the dusty trail on an adventure!

On a more tangible level I can teach language, painting and drawing techniques, a few unique recipes and maybe even some communication tricks. Film production and distribution planning. I have experience with several GIS programs. I grew up taking care of massive vegetable gardens and swaths of house plants. Every fall I butchered chickens and split wood to heat my house. If you have any questions regarding taking care of plants I can likely answer them. I have worked on research with honeybees, bumblebees, and now the polar regions of the world so be sure to ask me if you have questions I love talking about it :D

What I Can Share with Hosts

- A good Minnesota meal (depending on my schedule)
- From the "Teach Learn Share" section maybe take your pick!
- Kindness, to listen, to help you plan your next move and maybe even inspire
- I seriously don't mind chores or helping with projects as long as we talk first about it :)
