ABOUT ME
I moved back to Columbia about three years ago after living in LA, San Francisco, Berlin and Philadelphia. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I worked in politics for a while, but have settled in to a great job doing programming for a non-profit cinema here in town, teaching at the university, and running an annual film festival here in Columbia.
I grew up as a punk kid in high school, went vegan at 17 (and have stuck with it). I don't play music much any more, am a bit more understated, but still carry those beliefs with me.
One of my favorite parts of living in Columbia is feeling like I'm really part of a community here. I love going to my favorite bars and knowing I'll run into people I know.
PHILOSOPHY
I believe in the importance of community. I fear mediocrity.

Music, Movies, and Books
I watch a lot of movies because of my job and I studied film both as an undergrad and a grad student. As a result, I think I've learned to dislike film more than anything. But I still watch a lot of stuff. I'd say my favorite films are generally either teen sex comedies or 60s European leftist films.
I've always been a big music person, though I've gotten a little lazy of late and just depend on a few key friends to keep feeding me good stuff. Quickly, though, I listen to a lot of Neil Young, Will Oldham, Silver Jews, Animal Collective, stuff like that.
I just finished reading Per Petterson's "Out Stealing Horses" and before that Roberto Belano's "The Savage Detectives," both of which I enjoyed. Now I'm reading Gary Lutz's "Stories in the Worst Way." I always say my two favorite books are Frederick Exley's "A Fans Notes" and Sven Lindqvist's "History of Bombing."
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Once, while hiking in the Redwood National Forest I saw one of the giant Redwoods fall, seemingly without provocation, right in front of us on the trail. It was nuts.
