One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

One time when I was cycling through Germany I got totally lost because I rode off the edge of my map. I knew where I was going was southwest, but taking every most southwest turn wasn't getting me anywhere too fast.

After a few hours I came to a stream with three old ladies and one old man who were resting with their bicycles next to a bridge. They spoke very little English and I dont' speak German. I communicated to them I needed to get to the town called Eppingen. The signaled to follow them.

I rode next to the man as we trailed behind the three old ladies. He got off the bike periodically to pump up his tire which had an obvious leak. I offered to patch it for him. He declined.

We rode for about 45 minutes together when we came to a crossroads. The three old ladies went on and the man stopped with me to explain further instructions. "Go that way. Ignore the signs. They take you the wrong way. This road will take you to Eppingen."

I took his instructions. They were perfect. Along the way I saw two signs reading "Eppingen" to lead me astray. I kept straight and hit a bike shop in the north of the town where I got my next cycling map. That's not the awe-inspiring part, though...

Before we parted he looked at me straight in the eyes and grabbed my wrist with a look of recognition. "5 years ago I was walking...in Arizona." Then he corrected himself, "Grand Canyon".

I thought about it...I remembered hiking with my brother and a friend, Bill, in the Canyon about 5 years prior. It was an especially memorable trip because Bill got severe heat exhaustion and my brother went into shock. We had to camp the night in an emergency shelter and hike out the next morning. Almost 30 miles in two days. 115F.

Anyway... On the way into the Canyon, an old man with an umbrella hat and a fanny pack happily skipped by us, giving us a nod along the way. It was the same old man that just led me to Eppingen.
