Über mich

I'm an open-minded and easy going individual with a sense of adventure! I'm currently finishing up a degree in Marine Science at Eckerd College in Florida but my home will always be Monterey, California. I was born and raised in Monterey and it was this place that gave me my love of the sea; I was fortunate enough to spend my childhood frolicking in the waves, learning how to sail and exploring the world beneath the water's surface!

I love stepping outside my comfort zone and pursuing new experiences. Sometimes that might be something as simple as walking a different way home or adopting an unfamiliar perspective, but as of now this desire has manifested itself in more dramatic way. This semester I elected to do an academic program at sea- sailing from Barcelona to the Canary Islands. With a few months before I plan on heading back to school I have decided to travel around Spain hoping to improve my spanish, explore new and exciting territory and meet new people!

Warum ich bei Couchsurfing bin

Like I mentioned previously, I am currently starting an adventure around spain and I'm excited to meet new people and see a side of each destination that might be lost by simply staying in a hotel (hotels have little personality!). Couch surfing provides the perfect interface- people with certain shared interests and perhaps an open couch! Although I'm abroad right now, I look forward to welcoming guests or simply showing travelers around Monterey and the surrounding area.

Interessen

I love a solid discussion- philosophy, oceanography, religion...what have you. I love sharing my opinions and learning from others; I believe everyone is a teacher. My other more concrete interests are free diving (or pretty much anything ocean related), hiking, reading, jewelry making, dancing and drawing/painting.

Art is an incredibly important part of my life- I carry a sketchbook everywhere I go in case inspiration strikes. The one sad thing about traveling is that I have no space for large canvases or my acrylic paints! I love to paint expressively and on a large scale; acrylic is the perfect medium because it is forgiving and dries quickly-I'm too messy and impatient for oils.

Aside from art in the form of painting- I also love making music. I love to sing and I just started teaching myself how to play the guitar for accompaniment.

Musik, Filme und Bücher

I love almost all genres of music- what I listen to is very mood dependent. However, I'm nearly always in the mood for anything folk-y or bluesy. Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Nina Simone, The Staves, Simon and Garfunkel- all some of my favorites!

As far as movies are concerned I find this question nearly impossible. I haven't watched all that many movies but some of my favorites that come to mind are Fried Green Tomatoes, Once, Endless Summer, Amadeus, Midnight in Paris (among other Woody Allen films), Darjeeling Limited (and others by Wes Anderson), Frida and Across the Universe.

Books. Ack! I can't say that I have a favorite book because I love so many. A recent read that I really enjoyed was The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. I usually devour anything by Neil Gaimon- I like bizarre stories with strong characterization. The Picture of Dorian Grey, Jane Eyre, Electric Kool-aid Acid Test, East of Eden, Cannery Row, Shantaram....all wonderful!

Eine tolle Erfahrung, die ich gemacht habe

Spent six weeks sailing from Barcelona to the Canary Islands!

Good company, conversation and food! I'm happy to cook and don't mind doing dishes. I can also draw portraits...just ask :)
