I've met more than 1000 people from CS. Mostly I have positive experiences. Meeting new people is really nice.
I usually join weekly local meetups when I'm travelling or living abroad.
I used to join CS New York weekly meetups, CS Auckland weekly meetups and CS Hong Kong weekly meetups.
