About Me

CURRENT MISSION

One last dose of excitement and adventure before real life catches up with us

ABOUT ME

So, we were living in Glasgow, having proper jobs, owning a flat, doing all that grown-up stuff. But something was gnawing away at us: hadn't we always talked about getting some serious away time under our belt while we still could? Living, working and traveling in other countries? Doing some voluntary work in some interesting part of the world?

Against much sensible advice, we did it. We left the UK on 18th August 2008 and traveled in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and China. Then we spent six months living in Mae Sot, Thailand, undertaking voluntary work with the local Burmese migrant population, and three months driving campervans all over Australia and New Zealand. Then we spent six months amidst the hipsters of Melbourne, putting some money back into the bank and soaking up the vibe of one of the best cities in the world. Now, we're back a-roaming, South America this time!

We are a cheery sociable couple who like people and beautiful places. We would love to meet you!

PHILOSOPHY

Difficult to quantify exactly, but we both tend towards humanism and left wing politics. Anna is very into feminism and Andrew had a Quaker upbringing which sits surprisingly well with technical atheism. We are both open-minded (hopefully) and enjoy being challenged on our ideas.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

We heard about couch surfing from fellow travelers when we were on our trip and had some amazing experiences surfing around Oz, San Francisco and New Zealand. In Melbourne we got the chance to host some frickin awesome people and also to be part of a wonderful community. Now we're back on the road in South America and maybe back in the market for surfing...

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

There's been some great times, both surfing and hosting. Body boarding and kite flying with Marion in Noosa, eating pizza with Sameer in the San Francisco sunshine, talking Neighbors with the Marshes in Wellington, partying with Sophia and Miguel in Dunedin, Christmas day with some lovely Germans, a penguin and too much sun...

We've been amazed and inspired by the hospitality and trust when surfing, and the kindness of our guests when hosting.

Interests

We're both very into music and gig-going, reading and movies. Anna loves art, and Andrew is juggling his way around the world while missing his motorbike back home.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

While in China last year, we went up to Dequin province in Yunnan province, right up near the border with Tibet. It was the most incredible trekking and scenery we had ever seen and in one of the villages we stayed with a Tibetan family who shared their food with us and lent us their daughter as a guide. We had a fantastic night with them - a real lesson in how much can be shared without a shred of common language. It was even worth having to stomach the yak-butter tea.
