Overview
About Me
I'm a student, about to start the physical therapy program at the University of Minnesota. I used to play percussion in a gamelan group (Sekar Jaya) and drums in rock bands (401k, Watercolor Paintings); my plan is to start a new band in Minneapolis. I worked for years as a nanny and a teacher, and have been told I make a lot of dad jokes. I like to read and talk about books--right now I'm in the middle of "Tripmaster Monkey" by Maxine Hong Kingston.
Last year, a popular dating website said my personality was "more old-fashioned" and "less traditional" than average. Go figure.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
I like the idea of sharing what little we have on this earth with total strangers and I'm looking forward to meeting new folks and making new connections. I don't get to travel much, but my past experience with CS has been fabulous!
Interests
A lot of my free time is spent playing, listening to, or talking about music. I write letters and make zines. I bike everywhere and I like not having a car. I'm a beer aficionado with a very low alcohol tolerance. I'm also devoted to gardening, and I gave away over 100 plants when I moved out of my place in Oakland.
Music, Movies, and Books
The book I lend out to anyone who will take it is "Scream Queens of the Dead Sea" by Gilad Elbom. My favorite t-shirt is a print of a white whale my sister made me. Recently I loved Elena Ferrante's Neopolitan books.
I like all kinds of music. I'm really into post-bop jazz and European classical, besides rock music, of which I especially love metal.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I was once homeless, which taught me more about life in our material world than anything else I've done.
Teach, Learn, Share
I like to learn and teach music. I play drums, guitar, and pitched percussion instruments (e.g. metallophones). I would especially enjoy teaching and learning rounds with other singers.
I also know about how to build things like houses and furniture, and love getting involved in woodworking projects.
And cooking, of course! I can cook pretty amazing versions of a few hippy classics (kale salad, hummus, etc.) and I'm pretty much a novice at everything else.
What I Can Share with Hosts
I love cooking with other people. I love sharing the stories that are important to us. I love giving away zines!
