About Me

Hey there!

I've been living and working in Dublin as an English foreign language teacher for nearly two years (which sounds really frightening now that I write it). Previously I studied anthropology in Maynooth, Ireland, but afterward I became a little disillusioned with pursuing an academic career (at least for now) and decided to start teaching English.

Heading off this summer on a 2,000km trek around Ireland to get the Guinness World Record for longest barefoot journey and raise money for charity!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Like most people, I'm here to meet interesting people from different places. Over the past few years I've always lived with another person who hosted couchsurfers, and I've had some great times with people coming to stay here and getting to show them around Dublin.

Lately, however, none of my housemates have been taking on couchsurfers, so I've decided to take up the mantle and give people a place to sleep and a chance to meet some local Dubliners.

Interests

Books, music, philosophy, anthropology, hiking. Good conversation over some food or some drinks... Y'know, stuff. :)

Music, Movies, and Books

Movie-wise I'm happy to watch both big Hollywood blockbusters and slower or more obscure films. I do love foreign-language films and I'm always looking for new suggestions.

With music I guess it's a similar story - a mix of popular music and some slightly more obscure stuff. I like Steely Dan, the Police, so that's my dad rock sorted. I'm a big fan also of The Postal Service, C2C, and Mujuice. Lately I've been into jazzhop a lot - Nujabes, Uyama Hiroto, DJ Okawari, that kind of thing.

As for books, these days I've mostly been reading fiction, though I hope to start reading more non-fiction soon. Currently chewing away at In Search of Lost Time by Marcel Proust. Other favourites include Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace, Roberto Bolaño's Savage Detectives, George Orwell and Haruki Murakami.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I'd have to say walking the Camino de Santiago in Spain in 2014. I walked with a friend from Jaca in Aragón to Finisterra, and it turned out to be one of the greatest experiences of my life so far. Waking up in the morning and just setting out to walk twenty or thirty kilometres, beautiful scenery, and meeting dozens of wonderful and interesting people - I've been sorely tempted to go back since.

Countries I’ve Visited

England, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain
