About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Left with brain, right at heart.

ABOUT ME

approachable, social person with a great interest in (and quite some experience with) the human condition.
bizarre ideas sometimes that are mostly harmless.

at the moment, i am pursuing a PhD in neuroscience trying to find out why it is that we spend a third of our lives fast asleep.
i am living together with my husband and a rainforest in reading.

PHILOSOPHY

'Es ist nicht gesagt,
dass es besser wird,
wenn es anders wird.
Wenn es aber besser werden soll,
muss es anders werden.'

- Georg Christoph Lichtenberg

An aphorism by a German humanist in the spirit of enlightenment. Translates roughly to:

'Change does not necessarily entail progress, but progress necessarily entails change.'

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I try to be a good person. Since there are myriads of very good people on this planet, it's not quite that hard.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

smooth surfing, hearty hosting, tipsy traveling, autostopping, and quite a lot of rearranging bulky sofas :)

Interests

- your brain, my brain, and how we're messing with either [Neuroscience]

- languages and their main media (literature, conversation, recitation, language philosophy)

- art with all its media and aspects (beauty, colors and color reception [painting], form and form reduction [caricature/sketch], music [piano])

- nature and nature protection [German Association for Nature Protection]

- politics and what it does tell us about the dissociation of reality and ideals [global politics]

- movement, to endure and to explore, esp. endurance sports like hiking, running, swimming and the like, and I really like dancing, too, and snorkeling

Music, Movies, and Books

getting started on this CS section, it'd be endless... books that supply just the right words for you to describe your current life situation, to get a grip on it and to interpret what it does to you and how you ended up in it (mercier: nighttrain to lisbon, hesse: siddhartha, steppenwolf, w. genazino, dostojewski, manymanymany more)

ringing a tone in you is something that music can do too, in other ways. thus, many phases in life will have a 'ring to them', a kind of music or a specific album you associate with it. for me, this includes erykah bandu, fleet foxes, lou reed, pomplamoose and my terrible friend, sweet (don't ask), little dragon, miles davis and coltraine and manymanymany more...

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

these tiny, almost invisible, timid blossoms on these huge saguaro (lucky luke-like) cacti in arizona - a very rare sight of shy beauty on one of the most well-fortified, intimidating plants in this harsh environment...

Teach, Learn, Share

I wouldn't say that I can teach you specific things - I can talk with you about almost everything and you might be a bit surprised where this will take you :).

Ok, I know about healthy living and a bit about raw foodism and can show you some yummy cooking. I can paint with you focusing on color rather than form. Obviously, I know about neuroscience and quite some nerdy stuff and I love to talk about that as well.

I would like to practice more Spanish - love the language! Same goes for French and Swedish, the French of the North.

Generally, just sharing seemingly random bits of life experience does all the teaching.

What I Can Share with Hosts

come cooking, for sure (nothing German, promised, unless explicitly demanded by the daring), and thoughts, and travel marvels

depends on the host, really - the end result of visiting someone is not the net sum of its participating parts

Countries I’ve Visited

Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ecuador, Egypt, France, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Malta, Netherlands, Peru, Portugal, Russian Federation, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States, Venezuela
