About Me

CURRENT MISSION

be helpful and compassionate to all sentient beings

ABOUT ME

grew up in los angeles but left for greener pastures soon after. now i hang out with the four-legged creatures in the green pastures of vermont. started to travel while i was at university(BA-medieval literature and african/american studies)i have traveled around quite a bit in the usa before heading abroad-i only have michigan and alaska to go before i've seen all 50 states. much of that traveling was following the grateful dead-or were they following me-they just always seemed to be in whatever town i happened to be in. i enjoy studying languages, playing music, growing and cooking good food and whatever nature has to offer. i like to travel by bicycle or hitchhiking-but bus, train, plane or ship if necessary.

PHILOSOPHY

listen well and speak as the lorax

Music, Movies, and Books

movies-not a fan of hollywood and don't have a tv-but like a good movie. 'harold and maude', 'the princess bride', 'rabbit proof fence', 'monsoon wedding', 'waking ned divine', 'i heart huckabees', 'the isle', 'burnt by the sun' are some of my favorites-korean films are breathtaking and beyond the norm.
authors-peter mathiessen, leslie marmon silko, marge piercy, louis bernieres, haruki murakami, jorge luis borges (can he be considered a god?), kathy acker, john berger and Dharma, medieval literature and late 19th and early 20th century russian literature are some good examples of reading material
poets-adrienne rich, elizabeth bishop, yevgeny yevtushenko, mary oliver, louise gluck, sandra cisneros, rainer rilke, langston hughes, anna akhmatova, rumi, john donne, haiku and chinese buddhist poetry.
music-of course the grateful dead is my favorite band but also the boxing gandhis, michael franti and spearhead, moldy peaches, acoustic hot tuna, diamanda galas, mazzy star, nina simone, roots reggae-not the dub stuff, delta blues(mississippi john hurt, robert johnson, petey wheatstraw), koko taylor. i tend to like acoustic folk music(dar williams, indigo girls, robert earl keene jr. and richard shindell, Arlo and Woody) and bluegrass but really all types-jazz(miles davis, ron carter), classical(the real discordant stuff like stravinsky and bartok and of course paganini), north african and middle eastern music(habib koite and hamza el-din, anything from iran and turkey) the oud instrument has become an obsession of mine recently
art is not mentioned but mark rothko must be-also watercolour artists

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

trekking in the sahara desert was a life altering experience-also waking up every morning is always pretty special

Teach, Learn, Share

I am an ever evolving cook and gardener. I think that government isn't evil so much as just completely irrelevant to life. Create community and ditch the barbaric notion of being taken care of by some abstract force-thus to share and learn and help each other and all creatures.
