About Me
Sahyadri
I grew up and studied mostly in a boarding school in Pune, India. It was two hours from the main city, located on a hill, overlooking a water reservoir. We lived a simple, enriched life, constantly surrounded by nature. I never felt homesick. Each class had only a few students, and thus everyone had the opportunity to know and interact with each other. We became a family. Our teachers were more like our friends, with whom we could chat, play football, or go for a walk with. This place provided the base for who I am today.
Youtube
A lot of my knowledge and motivation comes from the videos I watch on Youtube. I am not so much of a book person; I can perhaps be called a Youtube person. A few years ago I was very enthusiastic about origami, for which Youtube was the platform where I found tutorials. From there, my interests have grown; my recent watching history consists of: Science, Philosophy, DIY and life hacks, video games, EDM, calisthenics, and the occasional vlogger. I was thrilled, not only to find a lot of people making and doing amazing things but living unimaginable lives. Perhaps, one day, I will have the time and space to start a channel of my own.
interest for engineering (making things)
How does the world work? Flavours of this question, in different magnitudes, has dominated my mind all the time. As a child, I would often open up my toys to see how the parts worked together... and in school, I found that science addresses my curiosity. I love making things with my hands, like Origami, building things with wood and metal and so on. It only seemed appropriate to take up engineering (I now study at TUHH, Hamburg) so I am able to do these things on another level.
I had a phase where I wanted to make different kinds of lamps, so I made lamps out of old cassette tapes, and several out of paper using origami techniques. Recently a friend and I came across a lot of junk bicycles with stolen tyres and broken chains. Since we both needed a bicycle for ourselves, we used the different parts of all the useless bicycles and built 2 fully functioning bikes, one of which I use every day. I love to make and build things, and love to learn so I can make and build even better things.
Vegan
When growing up, I was surrounded by activists and educators who cared about the environment. I was aware of the meat and milk industries for a long time, and it came to a point in my adulthood when changing diet to be vegan was a natural choice. It wasn’t easy to make the change when I was in India, where milk-based ingredients pervade every food item. When I came to Germany and found the supermarkets full of alternatives, I made the change. It’s been almost a year, and I do feel good about myself. I’m waiting to see how differently it affects my health, and I'm waiting to see if it really is a healthier lifestyle.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
I heard of this website years ago, after reading a newspaper article. I made an account then, thinking I might have the opportunity to use it someday. That day has come.
My girlfriend and I have been in long distance for nearly three years and a half years now. We had many instances when we thought we could see each other again, even if only for a short time, but for reasons outside of our control, each time brought only disappointment.
But just last month, out of the blue, I was able to go back to India and visit her for a few days. Our luck seems to have changed, at least for now- she is visiting Zurich, to attend a workshop at ZHDK. I am taking a bus from Germany to meet her. I am turning to couch surfing to help make our second meeting in three years happen.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Right now, I'm handling two jobs, studying to be an engineer, finding time to be social, making all my vegan meals while taking care of the nutrients, and doing all my laundry/cleaning.
To balance all of these things every day in a completely foreign country, I think, is pretty great for a new adult.
