About Me

ABOUT ME

"Armin is quick to make friends with travelers and locals alike. He would be a great person to meet in your hostel dorm, or a welcome guest on your couch. No need to spend a lot of time showing Armin around the city. As an independent traveler, he can figure out how to get into adventures on his own. I traveled with Armin off and on for a couple months in Thailand. I would be glad to see him again if he ever dropped by Los Angeles, and he would certainly be welcome to stay at my place."

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Living in a small village in rural philipines
I made friends in the philippines who invited me to travel with them home to their village. It was around easter time so they were going home to visit family. The house I lived in had cinder block walls which never sealed completely with the tin roof of the house. Windows were also open to the outside except for some cloth placed over them. Out back there was a hand pumped well whose water would be used for washing dishes, taking showers, and using a bucket in the bathroom in lieu of toilet paper. The meals were all amazing except for one. Everyday the family caught fresh fish from a nearby lake, and traded food from their garden with other relatives who had gardens and pig farms. We ate family style on the ground with huge banana leaves serving as table cloth. All the food they prepared was delicious, particularly the fish. The one exception was when they decided to cook me a western meal and they made spaghetti. The tomato sauce in the philippines can be a strange pink color because so much sugar has been added to it. The pink spaghetti I ate was really pretty bad and I think they were a bit sad I didn't enjoy it as much as they were expecting hehe. Finally, the philippines is amazing because so many people would come over to the house to talk with me, even 80 year old ladies who amazingly spoke great english! The couple of weeks I spent in this village were easily one of the highlights of my trip.
