Why I’m on Couchsurfing
When I discovered Couchsurfing in January 2019 I was ecstatic! I had been pondering on the fact how awful it can be to travel alone without being able to make any authentic and meaningful connections with people in other countries. I always assumed the only places to socialize abroad were bars and nightclubs and neither of those options appeal to me in the slightest. What about hostels? Certainly, they can offer great opportunities to make friends and enhance your travel experience. But they can also leave you feeling lonely and disappointed – especially if you aren’t an extrovert.
Then all of a sudden I had this hunch: “Wait a minute, I’ve heard of some website that lets you stay with other people for free, right? What was the name again?” And then it struck me: Couchsurfing. A friend of mine from the US had actually mentioned this a few months back, but it hadn’t registered in my mind at the time. I immediately started researching online to learn more about it. Before long, I realized this is probably the best way to travel if you want your vacation to be anything but dull and disappointing! Sure enough, I was right. Some of my best and most unique memories from abroad have been with CS hosts. I’m so grateful for them. God bless them.

Music, Movies, and Books
BOOKS & AUTHORS: The Holy Bible, Edgar Allan Poe, Derek Prince, Halldór Laxness (the only Icelandic Nobel Prize winner) and many of the classical Icelandic poets.
MUSIC: Hebrew music!!! I particularly like Keren Silver's album "Show Me Your Glory" which is Christian Messianic worship. So amazing. I also like Christian worship music in general, EDM, Greek music, rap, pop and upbeat dance/party music. My favorite artist is David Bowie since I was basically raised listening to him. My parents left me no choice (putting speakers to my mother's womb while I was in it 😂) and I’m grateful for that! I have so many other artists and songs that I love listening to. Way too many to mention them all here.
MOVIES & TV SHOWS: The Matrix, The Hangover, The Dictator, Contact (1997), Prison Break, Alias, Monk, Chuck, White Collar and of course The Chosen – which is about the Lord Jesus Christ – just to name a few of my favorite movies and shows. There are so many others… My favorite movie genre is action/comedy. But I also like comedy, sci-fi, action, adventure, romance/comedy and mystery. I don’t like horror movies or crime movies with too much death and violence. And I abhor movies that are blasphemous in nature.

Teach, Learn, Share
TEACH: I can teach you Icelandic. I can also help you with English and German. I can introduce you to Icelandic music of various genres. I can teach you what I know about our culture and history. I can train you in the art of poetry. Perhaps, we can compose a poem together! I can also teach you a great deal about the Holy Bible and Christian theology if you're curious.
SHARE: I can sing for you in Greek or rap for you in German. I can also share with you myriad interesting things about Iceland from the perspective of a native to prepare you for your trip or merely to quench your curiosity. I can share of my time to help you with chores as well as provide you with good, friendly company.
LEARN: I love learning the ways of other people. I’m happy to learn all about you, your life, your struggles, your triumphs, your aspirations, your passions and anything else you want to share, as long as you respect my beliefs and boundaries. I will, of course, respect yours too! Getting to know another person can be such an illuminating experience and a source of great inspiration. I very much dislike small talk. But I love an authentic and profound discourse. It would also be awesome if you could teach me a couple of phrases in your native tongue if it's one I'm not familiar with.
What I Can Share with Hosts
I can offer you a friendship with an Icelander that you hopefully won't forget anytime soon. I'm happy to help you with chores to the best of my ability and capacity. I'm also willing to cook a lavish and delicious dinner just for you... drumroll please... pasta with boiled eggs and pasta sauce. It's the only recipe I know but you'll be surprised. Don’t judge a book by its cover. Just wait and see. One CS host in Tenerife actually bestowed on me the honorary title “King of Pasta and Eggs.” I'm looking forward to staying with you on my next adventure! UPDATE: I've actually learned how to cook another dish by now, just as exotic... scrambled eggs with cottage cheese, salt and pepper. I'm still learning how to cook rice properly. So, please, keep your expectations reasonable.
