Hey! I'm Arthur. Lawful-neutral ENTP :) Nice to meet you!

Natural from São Paulo, Brazil. Graduated in Law, working as judicial clerk at São Paulo's Justice Court. I try to follow a minimalist life-style, but nothing that would make you less comfortable.

I'm very easy-going and relaxed, and I don't stress over small problems. I bet a beer we'll get along. I'm also quite talkative and upbeat, and I love invinting my friends for some games, snacks and drinks. Other than that, you'll usually find me playing videogames and reading comic books, or wandering the city looking for something new.

I don't practice any religion, and I consider myself an agnostic. But I'm very interested in sociology of religion and I have some buddhist influence from my family. People from any faith are welcome as a guest and a friend.

I'm not picky with food (in fact, the only thing I can think that I don't like is papaya) and I like to keep things simple.

I'm ALLERGIC TO CATS, so I can't host people bringing cats. I love dogs, though.

Debating is a pleasure to me, and many times I play devil's advocate just for the thrill, so select a topic and lets discuss.

Humour is an essential part of my life. My main references in comedy are Monty Python, South Park, Airplane, Mr. Bean and Chespirito. If you like any of those we will probably have good laughs together.

I love pubs and I know some cool spots round town. By the way, I love beer, so I'll probably invite you to share one or nine, if we happen to meet.

I think that's it. Feel free to ask more or tell me how to improve my couchsurf experience, that would be a great help =)

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

There are two foremost reasons for joining CouchSurf.

The first is to prove to my aunts and uncles that they are wrong and I am right.

You see, every single family gathering they keep babbling about how the world has gone so dangerous and people can't be trusted anymore, as if the planet had fallen under the rule of Sauron, the Deceiver.

As for me, I believe people are mostly good and humanity has many reasons to keep us enthusiastic, and travelling is reassuring this belief. Many people met on the road, strangers, were a source of joy and relief, and some are now good friends. Mithrandir is right, "it is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay. Small acts of kindness and love".

By returning that joy my optimism is reassured and I can point at my aunt and say "HA! I'M RIGHT!" :D

The second reason is better explained by two anecdotes I've experienced first hand.

Once I was backpacking in Rio de Janeiro, my first time there. I tried to rush the most famous tourist atractions in four days. Sure, nice views, but going up the Pão de Açúcar with nothing but thousands of tourist groups with their selfie sticks and matching t-shirts was both breathtaking and tiresome. While I think everyone should go there while visiting Rio, I was starting to get worried that my whole trip would be like that. In the last day I was too much tired to hit another tourist hotspot, so I just sat in a simple bar (we like to call it "boteco") in a neighborhood without many atractions and had a beer. While I drank I had an idea: I'll start walking and i'll drink one beer in each block, whenever there was a boteco. After four blocks I was in a god's forgotten, booze smelling bar playing snooker and sharing beer with three locals in their late 50's while they argueed about soccer.

Another time I was with an ex-girlfriend, heading out for dinner here in São Paulo. We would choose a new place at the spot and we ventured in a restaurant that described itself as "the best New York fashioned rooftop in town". The walls were pinned with christmass lights, the tablecloth resembled those red and white used in italian restaurants and everybody was sipping their vintage looking drinks in high heels. We left after drinking just one not so good and extremely expensive Manhattan. My company had to leave shortly after and I would go home. But in the middle of the way to the bus stop I noticed some people gathering in a bar (that's a common theme im my life...) and decided to see what was going on. There was and old man there, maybe 70 years old, playing his "viola caipira" (a guitar's variant) and singing traditional songs from the Brazilian countryside, his guitar's case filled with money donations. I stayed there for half an hour, watching while I ate a sandwich, spoke with him for some minutes and then went home. After that I was happy with my night.

Milan Kundera, writing about a person's subjectivity and human relations, describes two kinds of infinity. The first is the most commonly thought, ever expanding, limitless, overwhelming and epic, like the universe. The second kind he compares to the descent into the atom. It's within reach, small, needs such atention and care to grasp, infinite in the number of possible variations, like the uncertainty of the electron's position.

"Man knows he cannot embrace the universe with all its suns and stars. But he finds it unbearable to be condemned to lose the second infinity as well, the one so close, so nearly within reach... That the external infinity escapes us we accept with equanimity; the guilt over letting the second infinity escape follows us to the grave. While pondering the infinity of the stars, we ignore the infinity of our father".

I think that describes not only people and human relations, but also our relation with the environment around us. Hadn't I played snooker in Rio or watched the old man with the viola in São Paulo, those days wouldn't be as interesting. Of course it was only a fraction of the infinite - the infinitely small - variations that could have happened, but was good nevertheless.

I guess couchsurf can be a good tool to extend our reach over this second kind of infinity. Meeting people with so many personalities, knowledge, backgrounds and opinions is a sure way to expand our own possibilities. Also, is there any better way to really getting to know a new place?

So, that's it.
Do not hesitate to message me for help, tips, boardgames, a pint of beer or just to talk =)
