About Me

CURRENT MISSION

My mission is to grow my hair and then cut it occasionally, meet people and find out what kinds of juice they like, and stare so long at scenery that it gets all blurry and I just enjoy being there.

ABOUT ME

Higher thinking mammal that enjoys good music, great company, family, and conversation. I like to talk, would travel more if I had more money, and really enjoy hearing from people around the world and their points of view. I am at heart an unbelievable optimist. I believe myself to be a terrific writer that has never written a book, but I am trying to fix that. I think staring at the stars may be a prerequisite for friendship. I have battled a horde of monkeys on chrome rocket sleds to protect my children from Glenn Beck in my dreams. I have high hopes that you are awesome.

PHILOSOPHY

Ask me. Part of why I joined couch surfing was to be asked and to ask this question. It works out better in person. I will not judge you with stones, that is, unless that is part of your philosophy. In that case, everything is up for review.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I am willing to host surfers, or at the very least steer surfers in the right direction to have somewhere to stay. So far I have had zero negative experiences with couchsurfing and would highly recommend it to anyone. Having said this prerequisite amount of information, I have made wonderful new lifelong friends through couchsurfing and try to do my part recommending this experience to others. Here's a link from a surfer that I highly enjoyed -- http://travelamerica-mw.blogspot.com/2011/05/route-66-p-4.html

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I first hosted Lien and Walter from Belgium while they were here filming a rockumentary on Route 66. There was no live music that we could find on that particular Monday night, so some friends and I had one of our musician friends play Woody Guthrie songs around a bonfire to make them feel welcome. Since then, I have hosted 150 or 160 more people ranging from one person to a group of 5 and a couple at once. Some of these times were the best I've had in many years. Riding bicycles while our new cs friend sang Italian melodies is still one of the best nights I've had in a very long time. Oh yeah, having our Scottish couchsurfer (Johnny) dress as Elvis, fly to Vegas, meet a few of our French surfers of which the guy (Pierre) shaved a monkey tail into his beard based on my suggestion, witness the wedding, and then send us pictures was right there at the top! Did I mention that we helped plan this in a kitchen at my friend's graduation party while on bicycles with a liter of vodka in the backpack? I mean seriously, who could make this up? I highly recommend it.

Interests

Books, breathing, children, sitting still for 2 or 3 minutes, bicycling (a lot), recycling, glueing or pasting things onto other things to make new things, art, live music, traveling, different verb tenses, those things on the end of your shoe laces, the idea of a hot tub, flip flops, and funny sounding words. I also like talking about history and quantum physics often at the same time. I have watched spiders spin webs in their entirety, cicadas hatch and fly and then immediately eaten by a bird to complete the circle of life as my horrified son looked on, and made a food face out of spam. I'm not sure what all of this means, but I'm working on getting to the bottom of it. By the way, I really enjoy live music and asparagus. Also peaches and mustard, but not together, weirdo.

Music, Movies, and Books

Can't possibly list any short list here. I read voraciously covering everything from Vonnegut to world history, metal making to ridiculous comedy, and ingredient labels to everyday news. I don't have much time to watch movies when it's warm, but will watch almost anything when snowed in. I prefer live music to canned and will support a local or traveling artist to a blockbuster. Having said that, I spent years doing nothing but traveling to shows all over the place. Most of the tickets have faded to black and while I slightly regret this, they're just paper.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Zip lined over a jungle in Mismaloya at 600 ft up, 55 mph, and 1600 ft in length and that rush was 1/1000th what it felt like to watch my sons being born. All 3 of them. Also, I was born, which is pretty cool. And oh yeah, oh wait, never mind, oh well, I'll just say it, I really appreciate laying on the ground looking at trees.

Teach, Learn, Share

Don't rush it. Unless you have to. The best part of growing older is knowing when to not confuse these 2 things. Also, if you are requesting a couch and your profile is not filled out, I wouldn't bother sending me a request. We get a lot of requests and have children so this is sort of a weeding out the crazies requirement. If you are new to CS and have no friends or references this is not an automatic denial as long as you have a full profile and can prove to me that you read this rather long profile I've created and maybe send me some reason why I should host you. I understand being new to CS and wondering will people like me? Do I have that special quality that says I might not mind trying out couchsurfing with this guy and not worrying about my organs being harvested? Why is that goat over there? What are these robes for? Should I mention the juice or is he just messing with me? There is really only one way to find out these answers, and it involves sending me a message. Also, stop being serious, it probably looks bad on you.
