One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Ran a 30K trail race with barely any training (after being sedentary for the past couple of years) last weekend (08Oct17). I hadn't even done a 5K, not even a 1K, prior to participating in the Oregon Coast 30K! Eeeeekk!
I must admit, it's not the wisest move (the no-gradual-progression part, I mean), but I still feel a great sense of accomplishment after enduring the run (let's just not ask my body for any opinion on the matter).
I'll let you in on my experience a bit:
I was the last one to make the cut off at the last aid station.
The sweepers caught up to me on my way down the Amanda's trail. I just walked the rest of the way from there. I think I broke the record of making it to the finish line with the longest time!! 😄
I was still quite sore the morning of the race as I was still recovering from running the entire course in segments earlier that week (Monday through Wednesday)....yeah, I know.
My right knee didn't want to be subjected to any more of the obtuse "torture" leading up to Sunday, and was doing everything in its power lobbying for a DNS!!! 😵
Even my Garmin followed suit and decided not to cooperate throughout the entire race!! 😳
I only got about 4 hours of sleep the night before and was unable to warm up before the race. Perhaps not eating anything but sugar pills and jelly beans (except for a bunch of grapes during my first stop at the aid station) did not help either? 😶
I met a couple of people towards the end of the race. We knew we were going to be the last 3 finishers and didn't really care too much about making it back to Adobe by 4pm. We were just ecstatic to have made the final cut off!!😀 We took in the views on our way up the St. Perpetua trail. We even took a "group selfie" at one of the lookout points! ☺
We're planning on doing it again next year to try and beat our time. I say it will be a relatively easy goal for me, seeing that my recorded finish is 7:40:00! Hahahahha! Also, I'll make sure to actually train next time around, and NOT run the entire 30K course less than a week before the event itself! 😆
You learn something new everyday...and I'm definitely grateful for the lessons this foot race has very generously bestowed upon me. ❤️
