About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To travel the world in search of the perfect meal. Surviving grad school wouldn't be a bad second option.

ABOUT ME

To quote Bill Bryson, "Is there anything...to beat finding yourself at large in a foreign city on a fair spring evening, loafing along unfamiliar streets in the long shadows of a lazy sunset, pausing to gaze in shop windows or at some...tranquil stretch of quayside, hesitating at street corners to decide whether that cheerful and homey restaurant you will remember fondly for years is likely to lie down this street or that one? I just love it. I could spend my life arriving each evening in a new city." I'm a grad student, a home chef, a Californian...a joker, smoker, midnight toker...but overall, I'm a traveler. My list of countries visited is maddeningly short, but I'm aiming to change that soon. And my couch is always free for other victims of the travel bug.

PHILOSOPHY

"...to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived - that is to have succeeded." Ok, maybe it's Emerson's philosophy, but it works.

Music, Movies, and Books

Currently reading Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer (and it's freakin' creepy). Favorite all-time books include 100 Years of Solitude by Garcia Marquez, Blindness by Saramago, A Cook's Tour by Bourdain. Gotta love that 70's/80's rock...Ramones, Pixies, Clash, Boingo... Miles Davis on a Sunday afternoon. Manu Chao any time. And give me Kurosawa to Hitchcock to the original Star Wars flicks any day.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

One that comes to mind immediately is the Luminous Lagoon in Jamaica. In the pitch dark of night, you take a boat to the middle of a lagoon and find you are encircled by a halo of neon-blue water, as if someone had broken a bunch of Glo-Sticks underneath the boat. Run your hand through the water, and watch little cerulean glitters drip off your skin. Swim in it, and find yourself glowing in an azure cloud amidst an obsidian background. My words destroy it; go see it yourself!

Teach, Learn, Share

I make a mean souffle.
