About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To see and better understand the world's people and how they interact with history.

ABOUT ME

My name is Austin. I'm an American engineer with a passion for brewing beer and tinkering. I'm heading to Europe to broaden my perspective on the world. I look forward to meeting people and experiencing new cultures through conversations, food, bicycling, survival, exploration, and beer. I'm very interested in the science and philosophy of how everything in the world works. I'm also a percussionist.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I love the idea of couchsurfing and I've always been friends with a lot of people who use the site a lot. I like to attend some couchsurfing events and talk to travellers, but sadly I am yet to live in a place where I can host.

Interests

I enjoy running, cycling, survival, science, electrical engineering, and math (DSP, plant automation, control, microcontrollers, complex analysis), percussion, beer, and brewing beer. Right now I'm into trail running on snow-pack with a couple fantastic dogs I live with.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

The winter of 2006-2007 in the midwest of the US. That winter I drove from Colorado to Wisconsin and also from Wisconsin to Texas. Everything was white with frost and ice. It was so perfect and beautiful. My favorite scene was in Oklahoma (of all states) in the Lake Eufala region: The only man-made thing around me at the time was the road and a utility-pole that was destroyed by the ice. I guess it was nature's way of asserting her dominance.

This may sound lame to some of the people who have done it, but Airmen's Cave in Austin, Texas left me awestruck. It's a terribly long cave that is mostly crawling. Most of the whole cave is uninteresting limestone, but at the very end is a small formation room. Anyone who has done some caving would scoff at it, but the effort to get to this formation room makes it very rewarding.
