About Me

English
1. I Play guitar and sing. Before I left the US, I was playing in a bluegrass band with some friends and trying to learn the banjo.
2. I live in Malawi! I've lived here since June 2017. I originally taught English at a secondary school through Peace Corps, but now I work for the Peace Corps office in Lilongwe.
2. I majored in religion and philosophy in college so I always enjoy discussing deep subjects, although I always feel I leave those sorts of discussions with more questions than answers.
3. I love geocaching
4. I love writing
5. I like Kentucky a lot. I'm not really proud to be an American, but I'm proud to be a Kentuckian, which is completely irrational but I stand by it.

Chichewa/Nyanja

Español
4. A mí me encanta “Geocaching.”
5. A mí me encanta escribir.
6. Me gusta mi estado (Kentucky) mucho.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I had the awesome opportunity to study abroad at the University of Oxford in 2014. Towards the end of my time there I traveled around Europe and I used Couchsurfing for the first time to stay in Spain and loved it. I was interested in the very unique community of Mondragon and my host was wonderful and showed me all kinds of intricacies I never would have seen having stayed in a hotel, but above all, he was kind. I fell in love with CS then. Since then, I've surfed in Texas and hosted a few surfers in Kentucky. Now that I’m in Malawi I thought I’d give the opportunity for those who want a true village experience.

Interests

I'm very interested in philosophy as well as the concept of distributism. I really would love to learn to be self-sufficient in the future, not to save money, but because I believe there is something very good in making the things you use rather than buying them.

I play guitar and love to write as well as read. I have a neat little book club of people who I know that are currently living in various countries which meets online each week.

I am into history. Aside from meeting people and practicing hospitality, one reason I love traveling so much is seeing the historical sites surrounding various places.

Geocaching.

I love writing letters to people (and of course receiving responses).

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

When I was 19, I learned how to ride a bike, swim, and play American Football, all in one day, and about 10 years past the time when I should have learned all those skills. (Disclaimer: I still can't really swim)

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach you guitar and a good bit of US history if you're curious about it. I can teach music theory basics as well and also history of philosophy or general philosophical concepts. I'd love to talk theology with you if you're interested.

Learning: Anyone who is willing to practice Spanish with me is welcome (or Chichewa/Nyanja, for that matter). Also, if you're a teacher, tips on teaching are also welcome.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I'm extremely organized when I want to be and actually enjoy cleaning other people's houses and doing dishes (I know, it's strange). I'm currently learning to cook, so if you want to be the test of how well I'm doing feel free!
