One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I first stepped inside the Hassan II Mosque while visiting Casablanca in the spring of 2012. The mosque, which towers over the Atlantic, was built to celebrate God's earth, His sea, and His sky, all three of which were on magnificent display in the surrounding area. I padded quietly along, listening to a tour given in French, the vast, handwoven carpet muddling my footsteps. Even at high noon, the space inside was steeped in shadow, dark passages yawning ahead; an illusion of infinity. Suddenly, a great crack from overhead. The roof was opening, splitting in two and sliding apart. Our tour guide explained that this happened maybe only once or twice a year, during Islamic holy days. Birds that had been trapped inside flung themselves upward in a burst of color and song, chattering gleefully as they were freed. Sunlight illuminated the space in one sweeping motion. I nearly fell to my knees.
