ABOUT ME

Since this cite will be primarily used by me and my band, Backwater Opera, I suppose I should make this about all of us! Backwater Opera is a group of former/current music students at the University of North Texas. We're an eclectic group of four people: Myself (August), Robert (our Mandolinist), his wife Marisa, and our violinist Carlo. We do a lot of traveling as part of our job, and we thought that this would be a great way to meet some cool new people on our travels, get to share a little music with them, and save a little money in the process!

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Since we are a band, we'd love to play for you, if our schedule permits! We'd also love to get you into whatever show we are playing in the area, if you would like to come. Beyond the music, when our schedules' allow, we'd love to share stories with you, and cook for you! We try to always leave a place just a little bit better than when we arrived.

Listing one person's interests is enough of an undertaking, but four.....some of us love reading, some of us love cooking, some of us love the 1920's, some of us love anime, some of us love astronomy, some of us love psychology, some of us love making awful puns, some of us love video games. We all love music.

Morceaux de musique, films et livres

The Punch Brothers are our chosen musical deity. Everything they do is amazing.

Robert: I like any good music, love any movie with Fred Astaire, and once skipped class two days in a row, to read the last Harry Potter book from start to finish.

Marisa: I am in love with Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and that entire range of talented singers. But I can also enjoy very different music as well, from Bluegrass, to Metal, to the Beatles. I love any movie that surprises you with a good twist, and especially psychologically based movies. I just finished reading "The Bell Jar", by Sylvia Plath, and am now reading Harry Potter again.

August: My musical tastes are very simple; I almost exclusively listen to classical music. I listen to other types of music, but my knowledge of modern music is very lacking. Sometimes we make a game out of how much I don't know about music. Favorite movie is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I also love GOOD anime, (if you aren't familiar with any, we can fix that) such as Howl's Moving Castle, and Fullmetal Alchemist. Currently "A Feast for Crows" from the Song of Fire and Ice series. If you are reading it, or have, you are my new best friend.

Carlo: It's difficult to pick my favorite type of music...I've been listening to a lot of Flying Lotus recently, as well as Jon Brion's soundtrack from "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind". I also really like Sufjan Stevens, Andrew Bird, Bon Iver, DJ Shadow, and the Mahavishnu Orchestra. I love documentaries and Wes Anderson. I don't have a lot of time for reading, but I'm in the middle of "A Game of Thrones" right now.

All of us have different knowledge sets, you'll just have to talk to us to find out! We all have at least one topic that once you get started on talking about it, we won't stop for hours. For you non musicians, we would love to give you insight into the world of a musician!
