About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Spend as much time as possible in the mountains. UPDATE: I'm actually working in the mountains this summer (2017), so won't be able to host you, as I'm not at home. Very sorry, you can try me in the autumn, when I'm back.

ABOUT ME

I'm interested in montane ecosystems, trees, and hotsprings and their conservation. I will walk, canoe, fly, motorbike or 4x4 to get there and prefer to go to isolated areas. I enjoy food, gardening, learning and trying to dwell on this planet with all of its species...but then, really, this is only a small part of who I am. Let's meet, we'll talk.

PHILOSOPHY

Be a part of the solution (not the precipitate!) Meet and engage with others to try to understand differing perspectives.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've traveled a little and have always been overwhelmed by the kindness of people. It seems that regardless of where you go, or how much people have, they instinctively want to help you -- and need help. As a youth, there was no couchsurfing, but the same story played out, I met people and stayed with them; they met me and stayed with me with all parties being enriched.

When couchsurfing started, I originally hosted a few groups of guests before heading to Iceland, and it worked out just grand. I had young travellers, those studying swordplay up for a conference, individuals up for a conference, and those moving to the great white north from Africa -- all fascinating folks. I was hosted by an Australian Icelander in Reykjavik, then camped around that stunning country. Subsequently, I hosted a few groups of people who were also fabulous. But, then I returned to school, which got a bit intense, I moved, and I couldn't juggle guests, but I'm back (mostly -- I am working in the field, so am in and out of town...please be patient with my responses, as I may not have an internet connection for 10 days at a time).

I like to think that people are inherently good; so far the cs experience supports that theory! Fantastic. I look forward to meeting you.

Music, Movies, and Books

I love all three of these forms of entertainment/enlightenment, depending. Some particular ones are good, some not so much. Oh, and turns out that I'm a GoT fan.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Umm...I chased a porcupine around Yellowknife once. More recently I have been where the deer and the antelope play -- just ask, I'll tell you where it was. Jumped out of a perfectly good airplane. Been in a sandstorm in the highlands of Iceland. When I think of more, I'll add more.

Update: I've grown an ENORMOUS number of limber pine trees in an effort to research ways in which we can conserve them and their genetics. I've also learned to program in R!
