I am a medical doctor, currently living in Porto Alegre/ Brazil. I am a solo traveler and Couchsurfing has been the propellant engine to dream bigger, to not forget my travels, my insights, my hosts and guests! To never let it fall in daily boredom!

Getting around Porto Alegre:
Downtown is the oldest area in city, where you can stroll around, visit the Public Market, the Saint Peter Theater and the Mario Quintana's Culture Place. There you will find architecture from 19th century and very very busy streets! If you are looking for nightlife, there are two main regions: Cidade Baixa (which is quite close to my place, with many bars and clubs at reasonable prices, alternative public that fits with Couchsurfing spirit) and Padre Chagas (bars and clubs for the Porto Alegre's high society, more expensive, calmer and cleaner), it depends on your preferences. I generally advise people not to miss the sunset at Guaiba lake (nowadays best seen in front of Ibere Camargo museum, you can get there by bike) and Brique da Redenção (kind of street market that takes place in the most famous park in Porto Alegre, called Redenção). I usually cook my own food but in case you are looking for restaurants I have pretty good tips (mainly vegan/vegetarian): Buena Onda, Bonobo, Prato Verde, Govinda, they are all close to my place. Take care of yourself, Brazil has its dangers and you should avoid walking alone during the night or carrying expensive stuff. Women should take double precaution. General stuff: Rio Grande do Sul is the southest state in Brazil and we had a huuuge income of european people coming during 19th and 20th century, we are far away from the Brazil's stereotype around the world, which may impress you at first sight. People born in Rio Grande do Sul are called 'gaúcho' or 'gaúcha', and we have the best barbecue in Brazil! Also, we are the only state in Brazil where people drink 'chimarrão', a kind of hot tea served on a wooden cup (it came from the indigenous traditions). Besides Porto Alegre, in Rio Grande do Sul you shouldn't miss Gramado and Canela (cities with european feeling) and Cambará do Sul (canyons).

Conhecendo Porto Alegre:
O Centro Histórico é a área mais antiga da cidade, por onde você pode passear, conhecer o Mercado Público, o Teatro São Pedro e a Casa de Cultura Mário Quintana, tudo com uma arquitetura em torno do século 19 e ruas muuuuito agitadas! Se você está em busca de vida noturna, tem duas regiões principais: Cidade Baixa (bem perto aqui de casa, muitos bares e clubes a preços acessíveis, com público bem alternativo) e a Padre Chagas (bares e clubes mais caros, pessoas mais arrumadas, é uma região mais calma e limpa), depende das suas preferências. Eu normalmente recomendo não perder o por-do-sol à beira do Lago Guaíba (atualmente o melhor lugar para assistir fica na frente do museu Iberê Camargo, dá para chegar de bike) e o Brique da Redenção (uma espécie de feira que acontece aos domingos na Redenção, o parque mais famoso de Porto Alegre). Eu normalmente cozinho minha própria comida, mas caso você esteja procurando restaurantes eu tenho ótimas dicas (mais na linha vegana/vegetariana): Buena Onda, Bonobo, Prato Verde, Govinda, todos próximos da minha casa. Tome cuidado, Porto Alegre é uma cidade perigosa e você deve evitar caminhar sozinho à noite e carregar coisas caras. Mulheres devem ter cuidado redobrado! Aqui você pode experimentar o melhor churrasco do Brasil e o famoso chimarrão! Fora de Porto Alegre recomendo conhecer Gramado e Canela (cidades com estilo europeu) e Cambará do Sul (canyons).
