We are Bekki and Sara, a couple who live in Karlskrona, Sweden.

This account used to be just Bekki's, but we are now travelling together to South Korea and so have joined forces!

I (Bekki) am from Calgary, Canada originally, and I am a lifelong learner at heart! I have just recently finished my PhD in sustainability, about university food gardens. I'd be happy to talk your ear off about it, if you're interested in that sort of thing! I only speak English and a bit of Swedish.

I (Sara) am from Skåne in Sweden, and I'm into gender issues, and love nature, including hiking and camping.
I am a native Swedish and Danish speaker, but am also fluent in English. I also understand a little German from having lived in Germany as a kid.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I (Bekki) originally joined couch surfing as a cheap way to travel. But over time I came to see that it's much more than that! Now, I think of it as a way to connect with people, genuinely experience a place, and/or show my home to people.

Right now, we have booked a month-long trip to South Korea. We'll be spending most of this hiking and camping on Jeju-do, but will also go to Seoul, Busan, and possibly some other places along the way! We're hoping to couchsurf for some of the trip, or at least meet up with people in the couchsurfing community.

Just a few things...
My (Bekki's) all-time favourite trilogy is the Oryx and Crake trilogy by Margaret Atwood. We both like Handmaid's Tale and Orange is the New Black. We have a broad taste in music and love going to concerts.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

We took a 10 day trip to Lapland and hiked part of Kungsleden (a hike in the North of Sweden) after only being together for a few months - that's when we knew we worked as a couple!

I (Bekki) have done some teaching in Nanjing, China several times over a period of about 2 years - it was a really cool experience to develop my teaching skills and also learn about how 'sustainability' is thought of in a different context!

I (Sara) did a scout trip called explorer belt when I was 19. It involved a 180km hike in a mountainous area of Greece. The rules were that you couldn't hitchhike, pay for food or accommodation, but a few times I met super friendly locals who would treat me to a night on their sofa, homemade feta cheese or a cold coffee! I learned a lot of new skills on the trip, but also a lot about myself as a person.

I (Bekki) can fact check and myth-bust about sustainability-related issues! Want to know if GMOs are bad? Is organic or conventional farming better for the planet? How does climate change work? Hit me with your questions! I also play guitar and like to cook. One of my claims to fame is that I am pretty good at baking without a recipe.

I (Sara) can teach you how to tie different types of knots, some Swedish songs, and the names of lots of plants and animals (but mostly ones you can find in Sweden).
