Overview
About Me
25 year old with an adventurous spirit. Law student by day, beer slinger by night. Loves a good chat and always looking for a new beer buddy. May have a soft spot for karaoke and inclined to get down and have a bit of a boogie.
I'm a pretty optimistic guy who likes being surrounded by like-minded people. I think the magic of travel comes from engaging people on a raw, fundamental level and as such, I am always drawn to people who can stimulate the mind. I thoroughly enjoy people who have an unique perspective of the world and are open to sharing their world view. Big fan of swapping music, books and stories.
Ignorance, intolerance and piousness are three things I despise. I certainly think there is no better way to free yourself from these things than to travel and embark on new adventures.
I think Mark Twain put it aptly:
'Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the Earth all one's lifetime'.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
I want to be in the company of others who are similarly enthralled by the beauty of the world and share the same wanderlust I feel.
I'd also like to enrich the traveling experiences of others in whatever ways I can, whether it would be sharing a helpful tip, offering a place to stay or having a meaningful conversation.
Interests
I love a good whisky (my favourites are from Islay) and adore Johnny Cash. I dabble at chess, play a bit of guitar and am trying to teach myself blues harmonica.
I also like to keep up to date with what's going on in the world and am always up for a bit of a chat.
Music, Movies, and Books
I'm into anything that will stimulate the soul, challenge the mind and create laughter.
I'm a big Johnny Cash fan, love some 90s rock, enjoy a bit of Bach on occasion and rock out to a bit of rockabilly/blues.
Recent books I've enjoyed include On the Road, the Alchemist and a Clockwork Orange. Currently reading a bit of Nick Cave. I love receiving book suggestions.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Well it's much too difficult to pick only one, so I'll rattle off a few:
- Having a hot cuppa whilst watching the sunrise on Chispanai mountain peak, Nepal.
- Horse riding in Mongolia, staying in traditional Gers and meeting the local families.
- Eating my weight of insects and other creepy crawlies in Cambodia.
- Staying at a Gaucho ranch in Argentina.
- Jumping on the fastest roller coaster in the world at Ferrari World, Abu Dhabi and go karting at the Yas Marina Kart Circuit.
- Looking down at Machu Picchu from the summit of Huayna Picchu, Peru.
- Road-tripping around Iceland, and breathing in the spectacular views of Jorkusarlon.
Teach, Learn, Share
I think the most important thing is to be proud of yourself. Don't be too fixated on being cool. In the words of Bruce Mau: 'Don't be cool, cool is conservative fear dressed in black.'
What I Can Share with Hosts
I have a tradition of sharing a cigar and a drink with my hosts as long as I can get my hands on these things.
I know this isn't for everyone, but regardless, I always try to return the hospitality of others by ensuring the experience is meaningful for everyone involved.
