About Me

I'm a 25 year old travelling geek with a Master's degree in physics, 3 years of competitive ballroom and latin dancing experience, and a love of coding.

I'm also travelling with my girlfriend of a year and a half, Sara, who's profile can be found here: https://www.couchsurfing.com/people/sara-hollis

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I'm currently travelling around SE Asia and Australia with my girlfriend Sara. The next step of our adventure is to set up camp in Australia for a while to make some money before heading back out to SE Asia.

I've only couchsurfed a few times, but it has proven to be a great way of meeting interesting people who love to meet other people from all walks of life. It helps to connect people who love life, and is a great way to really get an insight into the local area.

My best couchsurfing experience has to be with my second hosts in Valladolid in Spain. A wonderful couple hosted me for a few days and, during those days I was introduced to their friends, their pets and his band (all fantastic). I also ate amazingly prepared Spanish dishes, and had a chance to practice my Spanish with them. I return, I told them stories from my life in the UK, practiced English with them, and even fit in a bit of proof reading for his band's song lyrics during one of their practice sessions! An amazing few days all in all :)

Interests

I spent 3 years ballroom and latin dancing, doing competitions in it while at university. Since uni, I've also done a little salsa dancing too - nothing too fancy, but certainly enough to get me moving on the dance floor :)

As aforementioned, I am a geek at heart. I've been doing software development for about 3 years now, both as a profession and as a hobby. I've created servers on my RaspberryPi, created small neural network scripts, and even created an Android app for a board game my friend is creating.

However, I am always open to new experiences and challenges. Since starting my travels I've helped look after elephants, swam in waterfalls and even learned some staff spinning. In the future, I'd also love to learn to dive, as there are some truly phenomenal places to go dive in this part of the world :)

Music, Movies, and Books

While I'm not nearly as well versed in books, movies and music as I would like to be, this is something that I'm currently working on. However, the lists so far go something like:

Books: His Dark Materials trilogy, Stephen King books, The Conqueror Series, LOTR.

Movies: Sucker Punch, others that I really can't think of right now...

Music: Thomas Bergen (aka the '2 Steps From Hell' guy from YouTube), Lindsey Stirling.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Whist at university, I hitchhiked my way from Southampton to Malaga with two other girls (a journey of around 2,500km) in only 4 days. We did it to raise money for the LCD charity, helping to provide education to children in Africa. It was a trip I won't easily forget...

Teach, Learn, Share

I am more than happy to try to teach you the basics of ballroom or latin dancing, as well as some very basic salsa steps. I'm also happy to try speaking with you in English, French or Spanish if you're trying to learn them. To be honest, if there's something you want to learn that I can teach you, just ask and I'll give it a shot.

What I Can Share with Hosts

My experiences and world views, as well a some dance steps. Good company and awful puns to match ;)
