About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To better myself and improve the welfare of others

ABOUT ME

:-)

PHILOSOPHY

I have a utilitarian-centered moral outlook coupled with ideals of altruism, quasi-progressive political stances, all meshed together in a framework that predictably is anything but consistent... but I strive to make it moreso. I think one of the goals of life should be to eliminate inconsistencies between competing beliefs, as well as actions. Reasons matter. I think this is a little more refined than what was expected for "personal philosophy," but show 'em if you got 'em, right?

Interests

Philosophy, talking about science/research, long walks, foreign and public policy discussions, improv comedy (spectator), new foods, bike riding (amateur), efficiency, (slowly) becoming a renaissance man, etc.

Music, Movies, and Books

Movies: Shawshank Redemption, Shaun of the Dead, Thank You for Smoking, 500 Days of Summer, WALL-E

Music: Death Cab for Cutie, Of Monsters and Men, Billy Joel, The Joy Formidable, and Journey (the latter after a few obligatory drinks...)

Books: Grapes of Wrath (Steinbeck), Brave New World (Huxley), On Liberty (Mill), Catcher in the Rye (Salinger), Love in the Time of Cholera (García Márquez), The Unbearable Lightness of Being (Kundera)

I don't think television was asked, and I don't have cable, but I have managed to watch (and adore) the following shows: Arrested Development (S1-2), Mad Men (S1-3), Breaking Bad, The Big Bang Theory, Frasier

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

One of the more "amazing" things that I have had happen, other than a few exhilarating car accidents, was while hiking Gerome, Turkey. My host and I decided to venture off the demarcated hiking trail on our downward decent from one of the "fairy chimneys" and alarmingly discovered that our steep path was in fact the result of sustained water erosion. Ultimately we had to briskly slide through a snake-infested corridor before lobbing ourselves off a 12-15 foot ledge into a measly shrub to break our fall and avoid jagged rocks.

It was a foolish, honestly terrifying misstep, but oh, what an adrenaline rush! No body parts (esp. spines) were broken in the process. ;-)

Countries I’ve Visited

Austria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Mexico, Poland, Puerto Rico, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey, United Kingdom

Countries I’ve Lived In
