One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I spent an afternoon in the very small hometown village of Visal a friend I met while Siam Reap Cambodia. Visal, his girls friend, my girlfriend and I were heading to the water festival in Phnom Penh by bus when we got stuck in a terrible traffic jam. Visal quickly yelled something to the bus driver in Khmer and before we knew it we had our bags and were on the back of motor bikes headed to god knows where. We arrived in a very small, very poor village on the Mekong where Visal grew up. When we arrived we were immediately famous and the many little children of the village watched our every move. After a tour around the village and a boat ride to a very small island with an even more rual village where we were offered nearly lethal homemade rice whiskey we headed back to meet Visal's family and to share a delicious meal of fried fish and a few beers. During our dinner there was what appeared to be a very important conversation with tears, smiles and laughs all of which in a language I do not understand. Visal's parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles were there and I tried to communicate using hand jesters as best I could. After a few hours of more eating, hugging, crying and laughing we got back on the road to Phnom Penh by cab. It wasn't until that night when we arrived in Phom Penh that Visal told me what the dinner conversation was about. He had proposed to his girlfriend and was breaking the news to his family right in front of us.
