One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I remember one case from my journey with my mother in Jerusalem. We were near the Western Wall on Shabbat for the first time. I saw Shabbat celebration before, but for my atheistic mother from Soviet Union it was a shock, she stared at Jewish religious people dancing near the Wall.
We were very hungry and left the Old City to look for some open place to eat, but nothing was open in Jerusalem at that time. We were standing and talking to each other about what to do, when a man stopped near us and asked me in English what we were talking about and where we were from. I answered to him that we were from Russia, my mother was in Jerusalem for the first time, she was very impressed. The man invited us to his house to be his guests and share Shabbat dinner with him. I responded that we could not go with an unfamiliar man to his house. He called his friends and asked them to talk to me and explain that he was an honest religious man and our visit would be a great honor for him because one of commandments for Jews is sharing Shabbat dinner with friends and family. But he lived alone and his friends didn't come that night. Finally we agreed to go with him. When we came we saw a dinner table with delicious food and wine, he served us during the dinner and told us about Jewish traditions. My mother spoke to him about her life I translated for them. They spoke about children and he told my mum that she should try to become happy if she wished her children, me and my sister to be happy too. His words made my mother cry and said that it was the most outstanding dinner in her life. For me this dinner was also the biggest lesson of kindness and hospitality.
