COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

20 years ago I had just graduated college and I headed up towards Alaska on my bicycle. I ended up in Seattle waiting for the ferry to Haines, a four day wait. The first night I stayed in a homless shelter with my bike and packs next to my bed. There were over 100 beds in that dorm room and I was the youngest and strangest looking to all the regulars. But a couple guys took me under thier wing and were in rapt attention as I told them my story of riding west from Wisconsin. Soon a small group formed and they listend for over an hour. I felt a human warmth from men who probaly earned less in a month than what my bicycle was worth. That was a good experience to have as a young traveler. The next day I was hanging out in a park near the fish market...is it Pike's Fish Market? I bike messenger saw my bike and packs and came and started up a conversation. His name was Allan and when he heard about my night at the Salvation Army shelter offered me a couch at his place. He lived in a communal house with 6 other people so they had guests often. I don't remember much about those 3 days at Allan's. I do remember hearing about his job and thinking that it would be great fun. 7 years later I worked as a bike messenger in NY for about 6 months, what a fantastic way to live in the moment. I also remember one of his roomates was a real hippy kind of guy but also loved watching sports on tv and yelling at the athletes in displeasure, that duality cracked me up. I did have an incredible experience while there. One of his roomates had suggested I read "Illusions" by Richard Bach and I found it in a used bookstore the next day. I was so high off that book I read it 3 times while I was in Seattle and on the Ferry to Haines. At one point I remember catching a reflection in a window of me walking by and getting a feeling that birds were flying out of my mouth. Wow that was wild. Absolutely and completely high on new ideas and experiences. My first and best couchsurfing adventure ever.

Couchsurfing has been a great way to host people and share in the adventure of their travels which is always a gift, one that is always well worth the negligible cost of sharing my home.
