About Me

Been living in Toronto for three years and loving it (except for the cold).

I went to Hampshire College in Amherst, MA, USA, and graduated May 2012. I studied a bunch of different things, including developmental psychology, elementary education, and agriculture. Then I went to school in Toronto for massage therapy and became a huge anatomy nerd.

Other interests involve food justice, and in particular, bringing school gardens to urban, under-served areas. I love working with kids, being outside, and everything to do with healthy, delicious food. I have worked on farms in the past and absolutely loved it. One day, I might like to start a small organic farm of my own (if I could ever commit to settling down and devoting my time and energy into one place!).

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

So far I've only been hosted while traveling, but I'm looking forward to having a chance to host some travelers!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

My first couchsurfing experience was an amazing one! Over spring break a few years ago, my best friend and I decided to drive as far south as we could in a day to hopefully get somewhere warm. Richmond, VA became our destination, a place neither of us had been before. We made a couple of contacts down there, and found 2 surfers to host us for a total of five days. Both hosts were incredibly welcoming, friendly, and inviting. They introduced us to their friends, who were more than willing to show us around, and a friend of one of the hosts even took us out to dinner! We ended up staying two extra days, because we just couldn't tear ourselves away from the beautiful city and the wonderful people. It was an unforgettable experience, that everyone should get to experience at least once in their lives.

Interests

Farming, gardening, brewing (I've made wine and mead in the past, but just got into beer brewing, and it's awesome), cooking meals with friends, feminism, rock climbing (especially bouldering), hiking, biking, and really anything that involves being outside!

Music, Movies, and Books

Movies: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Delicatessen, Amelie, Love Actually.

Music: Phoenix, Portugal. The Man, The Kooks, Awolnation, Fleet Foxes, Foster the People, Guster, Mumford and Sons, Maroon 5, Neon Trees, Sara Bareilles, Fiona Apple.

Books: A Prayer For Owen Meany, The Fourth Hand, (and really anything else by John Irving, though I haven't yet read Cider House Rules), that's all I can think of at the moment. Unfortunately, I don't have as much time to read for fun as I would like!

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

A few summers ago, a friend took me to an abandoned quarry. It was the most beautiful, sunny day, the sun glistening off the water. He had told me about the jump off the rock ledge into the water below, but I couldn't believe its height until I saw it for myself. It must have been 75 feet from the ledge to the water. He jumped in first, and a couple of the other friends that came along with us followed. Nobody seemed to believe that I would jump in, and honestly, I didn't believe that I would either. Yet somehow, the voice inside me convinced me to jump, and without realizing it, I was flying through the air, the surface of the water fast approaching. The fall lasted seemingly forever, until I plunged into the crisp water. I felt the most invigorated I had in my life.

Teach, Learn, Share

I'm really into everything DIY. I really like cooking and baking. I'm trying out the paleo thing right now, but I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for vegetarianism. I've done some brewing, and last year I learned how to spin wool! I know how to knit, and I've been wanting to learn how to crochet. I'd love to learn how to bake a great loaf of bread (I haven't had too much success on my own). I'm excited about getting the opportunity to learn and share.
